Greetings, I am thinking of taking advantage of the bike to work scheme am I am trying to work out the best route to take to work. I live in Adamstown and work in Blackrock. When driving i take the M50 but on the bike obviously this is not an option so any ideas of the best route. Google maps tells me through the city center is the best option but with all the traffic lights and morning drivers i would prefer to avoid it. Has anyone used the paths along the canal they stretch from Lucan to Inchicore and are straight all the way.

If you can get to Inchicore easily, then all you need to concern yourself with is getting from Inchicore to the N11.

The N11 has cycle lanes the whole way in both directions and goes past Blackrock (you'll turn off the N11 and have a 2 minute cycle into blackrock).

Or you have the Merrion / Rock coast road, which I don't think has cycle lanes the whole way but has bus lanes.

Apart from the stretch along Davitt Road, the canal has a cycle lane the whole way down to Leeson Street. Very user friendly.

It's a long slow incline going out of town as opposed to a steep hill.

Canal to Inchicore (Blackhorse Inn) then canal cycle path parallel to Davitt Road. You then have a mile or two on a cycle path along Dolphin Road until you get to the N11 turn at Leeson St Bridge. If I were you I'd take the N11 to Donnybrook and then head down Ailesbury Road to Merrion and continue along here to Blackrock. About 20km and there's no hill on the N11 this way!

I'd suggest the above for a start, the gates along the canal near Clondalkin ar annoying but you actually get used to them.

if you build up confidence in traffic, an alternative is to go via the Nangor Road, Wlakinstown roundabout :o , Terenure, Rathgar, Dartry Road, Eglinton Rd to Ailesbury Rd. a bit shorter but some of these roads, though wide are busy.

Some alternative to tha above is to go along a bit of the cycle path by the Dodder, especially beautiful in the morning.

    Enjoy!!!
