sounds like 2 more up and coming contractors that will be out of business next season

Are all contractors crap business men who can't seperate their love of machinery from financial reality? Running hugely expensive equipment with astronomical diesel bills for next to no profit. And willing to put the bill on their overdraft for months on end. No other business would do it.

Do any contractors on here have a pay at the gate policy or at least 50% at the gate to lessen the sting. You have virtually no comeback in this country if some decides not to bother cutting you a cheque.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭charityboy

you should be because at these prices the poor sod will be lucky to pay his diesel bill

Depends on how near it is to the pit and how heavy the crop of grass is.
Which would a contractor choose ? a short draw with less tractors & drivers at 100 quid ,paid going out the gate or a full crew on a longer draw at 120 and " I'll have a few to sell in september"

hold up a minuitte contractors dont get much profit out of silage its slurry, digger work, turf that makes the money. the only reason they do silage is to keep the farmer on his side hw i know this we do silage, and the bro in law used to run a fleet at silage nd he gave it up out at nights fixing nd ****e and nno money from it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 609 ✭✭✭flatout11

cant see how they can turn any profit from ot at €100 per ac...... at current diesel prices?

Ye not to bad. I told im to call in next time he was passing. He does only live up the road (within 2 km). I changed contractors last year as other lad wount come to agitate a tank, (saw him passing the next day ) and then said he was at same at the silage (This lad i drew silage with for 1 year and know him 8 or 10 years). so i said bye bye and went to this other lad. I always pay contractors the following day. I ask the price going out the gate, and drop cheque the next day to there house.

Same here but I haven't called him to find out how it will go this year.
This chap has been cutting for us since 1974 appart from a few years we bought in all feeding (from him) Unless he's out of business I'd be sure hell be back this year.

The herd no and bank account is in the OH name so she has to sign . And normally contractors want to get in and out and move to next place ASAP. so last thing they want is waiting around for 10 or 15 mins. Also most dont carry an invoice book on the tractors and if u dont get when your paying you will never get. Look at the big accountant head on me :D

My guy is making money with a wagon.

    eg. 30 acres done in 10 hours = €3000

    Break it down, mowing 30x€20 = €600
    Loader, lets say €40? (its old) 10hrs x €40= €400

    Left with €2000 for wagon for 10 hours = €200 / hour

If you had a slurry tank of similar value to wagon you would charge what €60/hr?

He charges 100 which is dear for wagon, I can get it for 90 when pay him on the day. I am trying to get him to charge by the hour!

In fainess, thats playschool economics. Firstly deduct 13.5% off the total cost for vat. The capital cost depreciation of 2 tractors and loading shovel, a wagon, a mower and a loading shovel would have to be factored in. Add wages, diesel, tax, insurance prsi etc on that and wheres the figure at. And at the end of all the deductions take at least another 21% for paye and then your figures might start looking slightly realistic.
