Bought a Renault Kangoo van ex-demo first registered Jan 12. It was taxed commercially Jan-March. I bought it in April I got log book noticed the CO2 was 140g so tried to tax privately at €225.
Brought in change of tax class form woman in tax office says it is €384 privately which is the rate based on pre 08 1.5 cc. She then insisted that I need DOE cert even though I stressed van was only 5 months old. I tried to argue the point ,politely, but she was having none of it.
She said it didn't matter about the CO2 on the log book her computer said it had to be taxed on cc if going private. She suggested I contact Shannon if I had a problem.
I checked motor tax website and can't find these rules on it.
Was she just clueless or am I missing something

She is correct. You can't tax a commercial vehicle privately on the CO2 rates, only on CC.

Is is still the case that VAN tax is on CC if going privately?

Looking at a newer Caddy, and the CO2 would be less than the 333 commercial.

I'm able to avail of the commercial on the current Caddy, so that's no issue, just wondering if it can be taxed cheaper!
