I'd say first test (inspection) then pay VRT, and then test again (NCT).

    9) For vehicles over 4 years old, an unexpired roadworthiness certificate confirming that an equivalent to the NCT test has been passed. The vehicle will be called for a roadworthiness test (NCT) shortly after registration.

According to that even if it has a valid MOT you still need to NCT it. So possibly even if its just 3 years old it needs an NCT too. I'm sure someone has done it before and can shed some light on this.

You book an appointment with your local NCT centre straight for VRT appraisal but it should not be due a NCT test until the 4th anniversary of it's original date of registration afaik. So a 2009 car should not be due it's first NCT until 2013.

Also note that it's first NCT can be done upto 6 months prior to it's due date.

Another option is tip around with the nordy plates till the pressure comes on and if you get long enought you may save on the VRT

If the customs scoop you they lift the car and charge you for the privelage. Up round Letterkenny the customs are out in force every day.

I know I shouldn't but I have to ask: Would you not have researched this /before/ you bought the car?
