    HEY,
We're looking do up the kitchen and bathroom. At the moment we have a giant chimney and fireplace taking up a huge portion of the kitchen. We'd like to get this taken out putting an rsj in its place. However there is pipework from the bathroom above coming down along the wall that the rsj will go against. My thoughts is to sort out the bathroom above first, is that right? The rsj will not affect the upstairs floor??
My other question is who looks at the kitchen to decide if the rsj is possible and which way to put the kitchen in. Is it an architect to design it?Is it a structural engineer to look first? Is there a certain type of builders that are qualified in using rsj. What types of builders would use these??
    Any help much appreciated.

    Arch for design
    Eng for structure
    Builder builds

Arch and eng on-site together , they discuss options with you, arch does a sketch then eng check structure will work, they put it on paper for builders3-5 to price. Arch and you pick builder, builder does the work, eng and arch checks, builder gets paid, your happy.
On a small job you may just want some initial input form the Arch an eng and deal with the rest yourself..

A good general building contractor should be more than capable of undertaking this work. The installation of an RSJ may require the advices of an independent engineer.
