How to default to wifi with Smartphone?

Hey folks this could be an obvious one, just days into owning my first smartphone, Galaxy S2 on vodafone - I have a minimal amount of data allowance so want to keep it down by defaulting to my wifi as much as possible (I'm home or at work most of the time where both are available) and I'm wondering how to do this?

Also what are the must have apps or can someone link to the right topic/site etc to recommend, I've spent the past few days reading forums, websites, blogs and watching videos, now it's time to ask for help me thinks!

I've got the 3G watchdog to keep a track on my data usage

I'm sure I have a MILLION more questions but that's my main one for now.

PS any idea on how NOT to loose half your day to playing with this blasted thing!! :D

You could just disable data and only enable it when you need the internet and there is no wifi around.

I don't know about Samsung but with HTC you can add a widget to your homescreen which will enable/disable data with just 1 click.

It will default to wifi automatically. When you're connected to wifi it will turn off mobile data and use wifi. You can actually see this happening, connect and you'll see the "H" or "3G" disappear.

Yep, and if you want to turn off mobile data altogether, just hold the power button, and theres an option to. If thats too much effort, there are free widgets available in the play store that will allow you to do it from you homescreen with one tap

    I use this one

Out of interest OP, are you with o2 on one of their 150mb data plans? thats the stingiest allowance I can think of.. if you have 500mb or 1gb or something there would be no need to worry, that is plenty for the vast majority of people

Just bumped into some self proclaimed smartphone nerds and they sorted me out (disabled package data from phone settings)!

I'm with vodafone on the staff friends and family tariff and need to confirm the allowance but when I viewed it in my vodafone account online earlier it said 170.?? MB  (which seems an odd number, not just a round 170 mb??) and it's not how much I've used as only had the phone on network since last night plus it's 0/170.?? MB (?? = some random amount I can't now remember)

I'm trying to find out if I can get add ons but I'll see how I go for now.

Thanks for the advice all and if you think of anything else that will aid my step into android please let me know - I've been deleting pages and moving widgets etc; I have the few things I want the phone to do and prefer to keep it uncluttered but there are so many apps I want now! :D
