A friend just booked a plane ticket online for me and he used Joe ****** but my passport has Joseph ******.
    Will this matter ?

It probably will. Ring the airline they usually change stuff like that for free!

What Wicorthered said... You must always use your name exactly as printed in your passport

Oddly enough though, I was returning back to Asia last year and the Clerk at check-in picked up that my name was in the wrong order even though I had flown outbound leg with out any problem. They updated the ticket there and then but gave me a bit of a fright.

Always isn't true. Much will depend on where you are travelling and where

Also the airlines, some airlines are happy to correct it whilst others are happy to rip you off for the typographical error.
