    hello all ,
i am wondering if there is a service available for checking the best deals and rates for exchanging euros to turkish lira.
the UK has several sites such as this:

    http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/

but i cant find anything at all in Ireland.
it seems i can only change currency in the bank or agents and pay hefty fees.
it may not be much to some but i would be much happier saving a few quid and sipping my first few cold ones with the knowledge they are on the saved commission fees.

    tyia

I generally find it cheaper to exchange Euro for currency abroad rather than getting it here. I have never been to Turkey but it is my experience with several other countries currencies. Most things are more expensive in Ireland, rarely will you find something cheaper here.

thanks for the reply and i agree with your opinion that most things are more expensive in ireland.

that would be natural when there is no competition for exchanging currency, the banks yet again profiting through lack of campaigning for better rates.

added , recently i was going to poland for a short break and called into one of the banks advertising heavily for currency exchange for some zloty.
i was told that they didnt actually do currency exchange unless i wanted sterling or dollars!!!!
however i could order some zloty for a fee and they would be delivered to the branch.
what an effing joke, so the banks advertising currency exchange dont actually offer any service whatsoever bar ordering what you want in for a fee a week later.
i would consider zloty to be a widely used currency in ireland so it fails me why a bank advertising currency exchange would not have the paltry sum of €50 worth! pathetic.
i am widely traveled and i have NEVER seen currency advertised anywhere to be told that they dont actually have any of it!!
what a service they expect you to pay for.

sorry for the rant , but i may only save a tenner by refusing to exchange at a bank but considering the pathetic rates and service i will not pay it.
i will look into getting sterling and exchanging that if it saves me or failing that take the above suggestion of exchanging in turkey.

+1 on changing your Euro's over in Turkey I am just back and on some days I was getting 2.36 Lira to the Euro. Other half works in finance and she told me that was a better rate then she was getting in work. Also look on some of the bank sites that are based in Turkey or have branches over there such as HSBC, I use Garanti Bank site for up todate rates.

    thanks for all the replies.
various forums have offered advice and we have decided on the following:

we will bring a mixture of sterling and euro to exchange or purchase activities etc (some vendors work out cheaper when paying in sterling/euro)
and we will also bring a small amount of local currency for water and other immediate needs before finding an exchange.

also worth warning anyone travelling to dalaman airport that the prices are allegedly a rip off.
so if you have kids etc bring a small bag with water and snacks as ive been told 4 bottles of water could cost me €40!! i dont know if thats true but what ive been told!

anyways , 4 weeks to go and looking forward to it.
if i pick up any more money tips or advice ill share them here
