Thanks for the info, as a matter of interest what size USB stick would you need to record programmes from your TV.

Boxes that record to USB generally use about 4GB per hour for HD

35cm camping dish. It might be grand in the south of France but absolutely useless for Ireland.

Not total crap as the receiver could be alright (it's HD and has a recording function and will have a guarantee). Nevertheless it's not particularly good value if you are only going to use the receiver. (The dish is practically useless apart from temporary usage or for camping on the continent)

I bought a silvercrest kit in Aldi many years ago, I hooked the receiver to a Sky dish and its still working perfect today, never gave me any problems.

Storm 10 how often had you had to edit transponders, rescan and delete junk?
With a freesat HD box it's never.

Surely Silvercrest is Lidl's exclusive re-branding which can be any make of electronics.

    Hi watty

I have it in the bedroom for BBC/ITV and the news channels, I have never touched it since I set it up, I know it was a cheapie but I was not worried for what I wanted it for.

Bet it's lost most of it's channels by now

To be fair re. the Silvercrest SL65 - (Comag manufactured receiver from Lidl), I've found it a reliable piece of kit that looked after the basics. Not Freesat so obviously doesn't have the advantages of that (auto-re tune etc) but it is easy to use and actually does a manual autoscan quite quickly compared to other receivers I have used. I still I have one I use for a second bedroom on an old SD TV.

Have some of the BBC channels not changed recently?

    +1.

The SL65 (12V) model I have was a great introduction to the world beyond 28E, even with the 35cm dish. Wouldn't recommend getting the kit with that small dish though, but my SL65 with the 35cm dish still gets dragged out for the father-in-law to watch Heineken rugby on France 2 every now and again.

Are you sure that the USB slot on your Sammy is not just for the integrated media player ?

Would you pick up anything on a 35cm dish?

This would be spoton for my camper being duel voltage 12v and 230v.

The dish just might prove ok to pick up Astra 1N in some areas, and when the new Astra 2s (E,F,G) go up then reception could be possible, but generally, the dish is too small.

When are the new Astra 2's going into operation? Eutelsat 28A must be on it's last legs at this stage.

It will work till it starts to drizzle. A waste of money.
The HD box is very basic too.

I got one of them today and set it up to test it.

It has a 12v connector for a cig socket and 230v psu.

I tested on the 230v and got a good picture but of course the conditions were very good today.

I just want it for a camper so wanted something that would work on 12v with low power consumption it won't be in everyday use.

I'm happy with it so far the picture in HD is excellent. It may not have all the bells and whistles but it works for what I want it for. If I find the dish is too small I'm sure I could pick up a bigger one later if needed.

First time to setup from unpacking to a picture took anout 40 mins but next time it will only take me 5 mins to have it working.

I'm not an expert with satalite gear but this is just my experience and yes you do get what you pay for but it's what I expected it to be anyway.

For a camper\caravan it does the job for home use I would say go for something a bit better as you won't be worried about power consumption that much, of course if your caravan has mains power go for a better receiver and bigger dish.

A regular mains box only is about 15% more consumption via a decent inverter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 905 ✭✭✭m8

Cost of regular box + inverter (a good one)?

And don't forget the inverter also needs to use power.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

I was including the Inverter power. It will of course be useful for other things.

The cost of a regular box depends on the features you want. No Electronic stuff in Aldi or Lidl is a bargain any more. It's rebadged stuff that's inherently cheap. Often now not very good.
