Nearly New Choices

I'm looking to buy nearly new having sworn I would never buy brand new again.

I currently drive an 1.4L petrol Astra GTC and do about 20K a year so the fuel costs are biting and would like a diesel. But I'm looking for a new car, so while I understand that buying an older diesel would incur more savings, switching to diesel is not the primary motivation for changing so I'm not going to buy an 08 5 series/ Octavia instead just in case anyone was going to suggest that.

So I like the new Astra GTC but realistically I will only get a 12 reg ex-demo model right now and a few of them I've seen seem to be highly specced and that's not what I want. The sterling/ euro differential isn't making buying a 6 month old Vauxhall look attractive either.

I also like the Giulletta (Lusso) and there are a few of them out there but I'm wondering what level of depreciation they'll take over the next couple of years vs other cars. I'm not a Golf fan but I know the old mantra that everyone's glad they own a Golf the day they want to sell it...

The final option is the new Focus and there's lots of them available but if it's heart over head, I'd prefer one of the two above.

So in relation to buying nearly new, what would you recommend and is there much wiggle room on prices given that you're getting a 'discount' on the new price already with this approach? Thanks!

I think you should have a look at the golf it is a good car despite it bland looks and also a Honda civic

It's hard to tell with the Guilletta being that it's still pretty new. If you're buying ex demo, the hit won't be too bad if you can hammer out a nice little discount.

On the plus side, having test driven it and some of the competitors, you'll be far happier driving that sort of mileage in the Alfa over any of the others. The build quality is certainly the best I've seen from Alfa (having owned a 156 and currently an 08 147). There doesn't seem to anything like the old reliability issues from the 90's and early 2000's judging by the Brera, 159, Mito and Guilletta which are all built on Similar platforms.

Why wouldn't you want a highly specced one?:confused:

Well if it was the same price as the less well specced one I wouldn't mind.

But I don't want to save a bit on the basic price simply to shell it out on 19 inch alloys, sat nav etc that I don't really need. I'd rather use the money saved for something else!
