I am currently looking into booking a few days away for myself and the better half in the second week of June. I have decided on either Bordeaux or La Rochelle as the times and cost of the flights suit us the best. Would anyone be able to tell me which one is better or are they equally as good. Ideally we would like somewhere with a nice bit of sun and a place to chill out.

I stayed in both about eight years ago.

La Rochelle is quite small, pretty and touristy. For me, it's a bit too small and I got bored after a day, but it depends what you're looking for.

Bordeaux is large and very attractive - the long, curved sweep of buildings on the riverfront is especially striking. There are huge numbers of cafés and restaurants, always things to explore, and an efficient tram system. Bordeaux's my favourite French city.

La Rochelle was nice and chilled out, if you want some place small....

I forgot - off the coast from La Rochelle is Île de Ré, which I think is a hugely resort among the French. I didn't actually it when I was there so I can't advise. La Rochelle is the sort of place that's worth visiting for the day - walk around, visit the tower, hang around in cafés, have a meal, and then return to your accommodation in Bordeaux or Nantes or wherever.

I'd go Bordeaux too, lovely city. I'd recommend spending a night in St. Emillion too. Beautiful, historic, picturesque place not too far from the city, tres romantique!
