Picked up one today in the bank, limit of 2 per customer.
Seems to be too complicated a design for such a small coin.

How much would this be worth in say, 20 years time?

You just go into the central bank and ask to buy one at any counter or what's the story?

    Thanks

Don't think so. At the bottom of the website (link above) they lay out quite specifically the different methods of ordering and calling to Dame St. isn't one of them. It looks like the goods are dispatched from Sandyford which doesn't have a public office so they don't sell them across the counter anywhere. You have to write or phone, no e-mail.

The main page in the link above shows all the items that are available to order from the collector coin unit, by phone or by using the downloadable form. The items will be shipped from the mint in Sandyford and will be delivered to you by registered post. Some items are also available over the counter in Dame Street. They are listed as such in their individual description. On the Monastic coin it says "It can also be purchased at our Dame Street office (cash sales only). Opening hours are Mon-Fri 10am -3:30pm, excl. public holidays."

If you work in the city centre and can pop into Dame Street it is worthwhile in order to save the 7 Euro postage. But if not, you might as well just order it by phone. This coin is quite popular though and may sell out quickly, so a quick call to the collector coin unit might be wise to check they still have them in Dame Street before you go there.

If you do want to buy it in the central bank on Dame Street. You walk into reception, tell them you would like to buy a commemorative coin. The security guard will escort you to the lift, you go to the frst floor, where another security guard will show you to the cash desk. You buy your coin (I believe they are limited to 2 coins per person) and you leave.

What if you want to stay and have a nosey around?

Dursey, I agree with you on the design. I think last years Celtic Cross worked well because it has a lot of straight lines which were clear and visible on even a coin that small. But this years design has no clear lines, so unless you get up real close it just looks like a blob.

Got a couple of them too as I usually buy a couple of each issue particularily if I like the design - last year's version was definitely my preferred one in the recent past. I really think they could have done a lot better on the design this time around also wasn't gone on the 2009 one which is still for sale.

Any sign of the wolfhound coin this year or when is it out?

The hound coin is due out in October.
In August there is a proof set of 2012 coins due for release and also a coin commemorating Michael Collins.
The Michael Collins coin is due to be a silver coin but they are currently considering making it a gold coin instead.

thanks very much for the info :)

Will have to keep an eye out for the MC one as well now so

Been collecting since I was a child - nothing of any worth but was always facinated with History and reading up about the places or people on my coins. Growing up near an army barracks here meant I was getting some coins from the middle east when people were on UN duty which only helped increase my interest. I think they will be something interesting to hand down the generations.

    Pawrick,

If you send an E-Mail giving your postal address details to coinsets@centralbank.ie you can get your name added to the coin collector unit mailing list. They will send you a letter advertising their new coins shortly before they go on sale. It will save you having to keep checking their website for updates.
