Chipping on the Green

Just watched one of the players chip on the putting green at the players champ and take a nice big divot.
Can't say I have done it myself even though might have been tempted . Have you done it or seen players you played with do it? Do you reckon it would be frowned upon if you were in a comp and took a chip taking a chunk out of green.
I presume there is no rule that you have to use a putter.

I think there is but wouldn't be able to quote it. As far as I know professionals can chip the ball on a green but amateurs have to use a putter.

allowed but one for the Pros I think. Phil M does it a lot.

Taking lumps out of your local greens wouldn't be appreciated.

Afaik there is nothing in the Rules of Golf that says a golfer can't use any club they want to play any shot, there's certainly no distinction made between amateur & professional golfers in that regard.

Having said that clubs & competition committees can specify a local rule that prohibits any club other than a putter on a putting green, my club has such a rule as there are a couple of large greens where players might be tempted to use a wedge rather than a putter.

Wrong. You can use whatever club you want. If you are on a green other than the hole you're playing you're obliged to drop off that green (Rule 25-3)

I chipped the ball on the green in a competition a few weeks ago, false front with two tiers to get over to get hole high, took the false front out of the equation by chipping it. Still made a balls of it but it was still the right option IMO.

Small mark on the green but it was easy repair, probably perfect by now. I'm sure I left less damage on the green by repairing it properly compared to all the people who make a balls of fixing there pitchmarks.

As of a few months ago I am now happier to see people not fix pitchmarks ..! Botched jobs every where, mud patches slapped down by a putter..!! Squeeze the grass in , not push muck up .. Goddammit ..!

No rule against it unless, as already stated, there is a local rule prohibiting it. IMHO you should only ever consider it when your line is obstructed ie you'd have to putt through rough to get to the hole.

Like the bunker in the middle of the par 3 6th at the Rivieva CC? :D
