I am not to familiar with that part of the country and I was wondering what people thought is the best route from Portarlington to Athlone, looking at the map I seem to have two options. Time will be an issue and I am looking to make it as quickly as possible.

Portarlington to Tullamore, then N52 to M6
or
Portarlington to Tullamore, then N80 through Clara to M6

Take the bypass don't go near clara, when you get to tullamore go right at the roundabout before tesco then just follow signs it's about 45 mins from port so not too far

First option, after tullamore the n52 is a descent enough road and only a short enough trip to the M6.
