My car insurance is up for renewel every 18th May.
Every year it is a pain because I don't get paid until 22nd of the month and things are tight at the start of year but always flush by 22nd May.

I am going to renew with a new company; 123.

My plan is to leave the car sitting in my drive for the few days uninsured.
It is a 10 year old car worth about €1500. The odds of it getting touched are zero.

Will the new insurance company penalise me for leaving it uninsured for a few days? Heard somebody say if you let it lapse I could lose my No Claims Bonus.

You should be ok for a few days, up to 2 years...

Just watch 123.ie man, the people that work there are beyond incompetent, apparently its a nightmare trying to get them to do the most straightforward things like sending out your bloody insurance disc

Im using them for 4 years now, have had nothing but good things to say and have made the cheapest renewals for me also. Staff are good once you tell them exactly what you need, i changed insurance to another car temporarily for a week and very painless..

Check everything that they send you.
They repeatedly filled false info on my behalf to get cheaper quotes, then send it out for me to confirm.

They weren't that cheap when they entered my details correctly (dob, home ownership status, marital status, claim history are what I can remember off the top of my head)

I'm currently in the process of changing to 123.ie, and have no problems with them so far.

I'm having problems getting proof of my NCB (thanks to my incompetent previous broker), so have gone beyond the stipulated 10 working days in which to provide it, but 123.ie have been very accommodating and aren't charging any fines etc.

After having paid the deposit to them, I was also very easily able to make changes to the policy (change of county from Sligo to Dublin) without the premium increasing and without any "administration charges" etc, as I might have expected.

They've been very quick at getting back to me via phone and email on anything I've sent them, I've found them very good to deal with.

I have heard that there can be difficulties in getting claims paid out from them, but I only have TPF&T insurance ... so, to be honest, I'm not too bothered about that. Would probably be more concerned if I had comprehensive insurance, but my car is 14 years old and worth feck all, and I only drive it about once a month anyways, so I'm happy to go with whatever company can cover me at the cheapest price!

As regards the NCB, that's valid for around two years, so I wouldn't worry about a few days!!

123.ie want 40 euro to do permanent transfer. 10 for temporary. They also get stuck in with a higher premium when changing mid policy. Tried changing from 2 litre 170 HP jap to 1.8 130 hp merc with half the value. 40 admin plus 40 premium for remaining 8 months of policy. If you are prone to changing cars mid policy, it won't be cheap.

I would avoid 123 like the plague. Apart from the obvious temp changes of policy charges which are outrageous, they had me on a policy that had a 4k excess!!!!!! They never told me that until I started to delve into the small print on renewing my policy with them.

I'm with Axa....not the cheapest but very straight forward with no b/s or sneakiness

My excess is only €300 or something!

I'd say 123 is probably most suitable for "low-risk" drivers with inexpensive cars!

Even low risk drivers could find their low value car off the road for a few days waiting for parts. A garage loaner needs a temp transfer.

I rarely use my car so that wouldn't bother me!

They are a nightmare. I was with them some time ago. My experiences were :
    • 5 weeks after renewal to get current cert & disc
    • sending me insurance renewals for cars I had sold (and told them about and sent back all the documents for)
    • charging me admin fees at renewal time for "changing the reg no on my car" (?). They messed up by sending me documents with the wrong details to begin with
    • charging me admin fees at renewal time that I'd already paid mid-term (temporary transfer of insurance)
Steer clear if you can and double check everything they send you. IME it's a 50:50 bet whether it's right or wrong. I still have copies of all the letters I sent them; they make for grim reading.

Make a complaint to the Ombudsman, its what they are there for.

I was with 123.ie (RSA) for two years and it was fine. No problems getting NCB.

They didn't even charge me for a temp transfer. And my policy dropped by 40% when I swapped to a lower risk car.

With FBD now simply cos of the cheaper policy. I would have no problems going with 123 again though if the price was right.
