Many companies do Classic insurance for over 25 years old car. You do however need to have another car insured.

can you be insured as a named driver on another car? or have to be first person ?

As far as I know it's can't be for your main car, limited milage and has to be stored securely when not in use.

The only way to be sure is to get a quote. Don't hand over money until you have a quote number.

try 123.ie for regular insurance, ive a 1993 gti-16 mr2 here and its 250 a year tpf&t with them or 290 fc. now my main car is with axa but if you just want that bit of paper for the window then 123 are good.

yeah dealt with 123.ie recently they dont require much over the phone ,and yeah im mostly looking just for disc as this would be a weekend car mostly to have some fun in sunny weather,as for garage i dont have one,and id value it only about 1.5-2k so its not some old high spec merc or smth worth a 100k :)

I had my 89 mk 2 turbo insured with axa in 2010, I bought a 660cc subaru vivio and took main policy out on that then insured the mr2 as a classic as it was over 20 years, worked out about 650 for both cars and i had a cheap beater that could take punishment and not be an alcoholic on the juice.

As fasttalkerchat said, you need to get a quote. Insurance is more about the proposer than the car - it may be that some ins cos who offer classic policies won't cover you.

What constitutes 'classic' is set by regulations for the likes of NCT and car tax but for insurance purposes, what one insurance company might consider a classic could be regarded as a dangerous old banger by another insurance company.

The answer to your question depends on which insurance company you're talking to.

Try campbell autoline in Coleraine, some lads on octane.ie have gotten cars as young as 15 years old insured with them, you need another policy though although it doesn't have to be with them,

now thats a good answer one could easily find toyota supra TT or rx7 of 20y age with 400hp under the bonnet.the other day friend came to me who owns rx7 and he goes i got a new tax disc which says that the car is 1.3 l and tax is 660 for a year, dont know how the hell he done it but inspector passed it as 1.3l even it being 1.7l and nearly 400bhp

It's actually possible to get classic car insurance on some 15 y.o. cars.

As someone said above though, get a formal quote.

From memory the classic must be garaged, will have limited mileage, and the owner must have a 2nd car insured in his/her name. Minimum age applies too, but varies.

1.3 tax is 333 euro so he isn't playing that, rx7's are normally taxed as a 1.7, This has nothing to do with classic insurance though,
classic tax is for cars 30 years or older and is a flat fee of 50 euro (i think)

I've a few policies. For classic insurance, most will class 25 years as a classic. Tax however is based on a 30 year system. You have to have another policy in your own now on a 'normal' car. You must be 25 (although a few will quote if you're not). I'm with First Ireland and found them very good.

Carole Nash, was insured with them when I had my 1973 Cortina.
They did not require me to have another car insured in my name, only the use of another car/being named driver on another car.
At the time had a company vehicle, that did fine.
They mostly trade as bike insurance, but for classic cars, I'd give them a bell.

Do yourself a favour and have a look in the charter of the Classic Cars forum. There is a link to a big thread about classic insurance. Have a read there first. Then start ringing insurance companies and brokers suggested in that thread

There is no hard / fast answer to whether you / your car qualify for classic insurance and under what kinda circumstances

    Pick up the phone ;)

I recently took out a classic car policy on a 1992 1.6 Nissan Primera my grandparents gave me as they finished driving. One owner and kept in a garage all its life with low mileage (before you wonder why a primera)

I got the Insurance with FBD. Ring up and ask for classic motor Dept:

    Price for insurance was E133
Had to join Irish Vintage Society E25
Have to have another car as your main daily driver/your own Insurance.
You wont get the policy unless you have paid and obtained your Irish Vintage Society Membership number which takes a good week. You have to post off a bank Draft to the club and then it takes about a week for your membership number to come back.

I rang the other usual classic car insurance companies and they wouldnt even give me a quote. The regs like Quinn Direct/ Aviva etc all quoted a good E1500

You will also need to provide a valid NCT certificate.
