Going to Croatia next month, and just wondering if I am planning too much here.
    2 days in Split
    1 day on Hvar
    3 days in Dubrovnik
1 day in Mostar in Bosnia
1 day in Kotar in Montenegro

Can anyone give me any tips, places I should see etc for Croatia?? Thanks

    Bump

Anyone that has been to Croatia, can they tell me if Split is worth visiting. Trying to decide to do 3 nights in Hvar and none in Split, or 2 in Hvar and 1 in Split

I liked Split for a short visit (just one night) and suspect that I would have found more to enjoy if I had more time. The big attraction for me was the old stuff: Hadrian's Palace, which has evolved over the centuries into being the core of the old town.

defo do one in split. its nice to have a few drinks on the waterfront, weather that be at night or early morning
i take it yourgetting the ferry to hvar from split so it would be shame not to stop for 1 night

Definitely stay in Split. The old town is fab, especially by night. We did a short tour of the old town by day too, mainly in the walls. You wouldn't believe the depth and height they've built up to! And yes, waterfront is lovely too.

Would you not go to Sarajevo as well the day you're going to Mostar? We saw Mostar in half a morning; spent the rest of the day in Sarajevo, and it was really worth seeing. Be warned though, nothing can prepare you for the sight of the cemeteries.

Also, be prepared to stop x10 going to/from Kotor; fab scenery. If you have time, drive up part of the old road to Cetinje. The view back down is unreal!

(You don't need to go all the way to Cetinje, there's nothing there. Also, don't come back from Sarajevo via Serbia, the road is awful and the locals are a right ignorant bunch. We did it at night, it was terrifying!)

Vert much appreciated. Am looking forward to the drive to kotor. Im only the one night in Bosnia so i think time will be too short to get in Sarajevo sadly.

We were back in Dubrovnik that night, even including the scary road. No problem.

Highly recommend Plitvice too, lovely spot.

Plitvice looks simply stunning but is just a little too far out of the way to make the trip

What do ye recommend as the best way to travel around croatia? We were thinking of renting a car, because the rail service doesnt seem to be that great.

Would it be possible/practical to travel via ferry/rail and maybe bus along the entire coast? Anyone have any experience in this?

If you rent a car, watch out for the local operators; even for the big multiples because they operate via agents there. An Avis agent tried to shaft us over a(n unattended) car park scrape and it took me a fair bit of work with Avis Ireland to fix it; although to be fair, they did refund the lot in the end.

We loved having the car for the freedom it gave us, but we both love driving. It's not for everyone though, there can be a lot of driving on some very thin roads with insane overtakers. If you do drive, watch out for euro plates with an 'I' in the stars, the Italians are /terrible/ drivers.

I am from Split, and I can help you with your questions.

You should definitely stay in Split for 2 nights. Diocletian`s palace is must see. And one more thing, everyday in 12 PM you have performance on main Roman square by the roman guards and emperor.

I recommend you to visit Trogir, also. It`s small town 30km from Split and you have boat trips from Split waterfront to Trogir.

I think that 3 days in Dubrovnik is too much. The town is crowded with tourist and it is almost impossible to see it`s beauty with so much people.

You plan to visit too much towns and countries in few days, so you will probably be very tired. It is summer, it is hot, there is no highway from split to dubrovnik, and from dubrovnik to montenegro and mostar. Be prepared for it :)

Trogir is lovely! Unreal views from the top of the bell tower!

:) ok, enjoy your holiday :D

Lokrum. Just see the pics and you will love it. But beware, there is a legend about ghosts on that island, and no one stays there during a night.
