On the Mullet Peninsula, I have lived in the house for 16 years and it is the first time I have heard it. It came from a meadow beside the house, I will listen for more time tonight and post a recording.

Great stuff:) A beautiful thing to hear:):):):) There are Corncrakes on the Mullet every year. One was calling briefly in Termoncarragh on the 30th April. If it doesn't rain or if it isn't too cold he should call tonight.
Where on the Mullet are you? Are you near Termoncarragh? You should ring Tim Gordon on 095 44941. He is involved in the Corncrake consevation project in Mayo. He's the one who carries out the census.
Was he calling from a nettle bed or early cut silage? If you don't own the land inform the owner of the meadow ASAP to try and make sure it's not mowed too early. If you contact Gordon he will give you the exact details on the grant scheme which are available to you (if you own the land ) or the farmer who owns the meadow.

    Update from the Mullet penisula:
On the Mullet, one at Emlybeg South on the afternoon of 23 April has been joined
on the morning of 1 May by one near Glosh Tower (in the traditional field near
Caislean football pitch, first reported by field-owner Mary Monaghan), and one on
the morning of 7 May at Carne Hill (in the largest field opposite the golf course, first
    reported by Elaine Mangan).

I rang him already and I am right beside the town, which is why my jaw dropped when I heard it.

Has the corncrake called since the first night you heard him?
