    Hi,

So I have a group project for a module, its due tomorrow. I volunteered to be the co ordinator ie put all of our work into one file, organise the bibliography and submit it.

We all had separate pieces of work to do and its clearly written in the document who done what!

Now, I decided to get a turnit in report before I sent it in. (it tells you if anything was taking directly from other places, just copied work) and I found that some of the pieces given to me were just copied an pasted from various website.

I dont know what to do about this. Should I just leave it and it will be the individuals problem? Should I post it on the group forum and tell them to sort it out ,but then the lecturers will see that too? Should I just email the individuals?

I know that the college will see that it was copied as they too use turnitin.

    What should I do?

As its a group work your head is on the firing line as well. send them an email to sort it out asap.

The feedback is your own pinion o I wouldn't like to give you any sort of advice.

do not submit anything plagiarised! They will catch you. Tell the idiots who cut and paste to fix it quick, if they don't then hang them out to dry. Don't mean to sound harsh, but if you hadn't the sense to check their work, you could find yourself in serious trouble for someone else's corner cutting.

lol, knda harsh but.......Numerous times have student been told about plagarisms, it cold also be the fact that they dont know how to refernece or cite a txt properly.

it cold also be the fact that they dont know how to refernece or cite a txt properly.

Every student in this module has a mandatory tutorial that they had to attend that spend an hour showing them how to cite and reference correctly. Its not even something that just needs to be referenced. Their whole text was just copy and paste.

Id feel bad if I got them into trouble by bringing it up, but at the same time I don't want to get in trouble or loose 40% of my grade for this assignment.

    Hello OP.

As far as I know, you can't cut & paste and then throw in a reference. You (they) would have to take the piece and re-write it in your (their) own words and then reference it.

That was always the way I did it and never had any problems.

Contact them immediately and meet up and discuss. They may simply have forgotten to clean it up, reword and reference.

    Best of luck.

This is the important bit. You shouldn't have to lose marks for their incompetence

I don't want to sound harsh but if they won't do the work then they shouldn't get the credit. Tell them to do it properly. I don't know what subject you're doing, but in GY201 this year we were told to do all this through Moodle - I assume you have a separate forum for your group? - so if things aren't up to scratch the instructors can check the forum to see who isn't pulling their weight

And definitely tell the department the situation too. There may be a good reason they don't have the work properly done. The department can look into whether this is the case and what to do about it regardless

I would strongly recommend you talk to the department, let them know what is going on. They are the best way to figure out what way to go about it.

Had the same issue myself about a month ago in a business module. Contact your lecturer straight away.

In my case I was told by head of department to leave the plagerised part in as it was about two hours before the deadline.
Out of suspicions we checked their work on turnitin, the person in questions section of work was all over the place not just with 90% plagerism but also grammar and spelling which we had corrected on the final draft, we were advised to delete this and put their original plagerised piece in and sent an email to the lecturer that we were aware of the plagerism but we were advised to leave it in by X.

In your case, you could do that, but your hanging the person in question and your grade may ultimately suffer without a fully completed assignment. Otherwise you have the choice of asking the person to redo the work, or make all group members aware and redo their work as a group.

    Quoting with appropriate citation is fine;

"20% of students eat beans on Tuesday." (Hannan 2002: 178)

If the passages are copied without appropriate citation, or as unacknowledged quotations, then this will be deemed plagiarism. They will be caught either way, although it is often difficult to discern who exactly is at fault - I would encourage you to speak with your lecturer as soon as possible.

They have clearly not contributed, and therefore deserve no grade - there might be a case for discretion on your part if their stupidity were not to impact your own grade and reputation. Conversely, your own hard work will end up subsidising their mark if the issue remains unresolved.

I have little tolerance for this ****e, speak up as soon as you can.

    I contacted the people involved.

We found out that one of them "shared" her work with a friend to show them how to do it. She re-worded it.

The other person just copied and pasted, I have them until 3 today to re-submit their work to me, the deadline is at 4! So far I haven't got anything back from them. So if I don't get anything changed from them I'm going to email my tutor and make her aware of this as she is the one who corrects our assignments.

Id say email the people in your group and tell them to sort it out immediately

I had already contacted them, the person who gave the plagiarised work said they would fix it, but so far nothing. I'm emailing my tutor and lecturer to make sure that they are aware of the problem.

Thats definitely all you can do im afraid :( Unless you want to re-do their work by yourself, I have done this myself and its not fun, but I'd rather pass then fail because of some idiots in my group.

save your own skin. F*ck those lazy gits.

If you mail them, and they were lazy enough to copy and paste, then they are hardly going to suddenly write something genius. Go to the dept or lecturer and explain you are not willing to have your grades and efforts compromised by others lack of effort. I would, no doubt about it.
