A good 50k to start with

I’d like to start out and say that I’m not a great athlete or even an athlete at all, but I just completed my first marathon in a reasonable time (I was happy) and I felt like I could have kept going?

So, on that note I’d like to push the boat out a bit and perhaps do a 50k later in the year, can anyone recommend one?

    Cheers :D

Excellent. Thanks for that. Just the logistics to sort out now (and some explaining at home :) )

Why not do another marathon and try to get your times down before moving on to a bigger distance?

I agree. Portumna is very close if you haven't put the training in. Why not Target the Wicklow Way Ultra next spring?

That look ah "fun", in comparison the Connemara Ultramarathon which looks farrrrr easier based on the climbs and surfaces encountered :)

I would recommend portumna as well.

I have the training in, I’d see the marathon I just did as a long run on that training. Mentioned it at home and it went down quite well. Cheers again.

Why is it always about going longer? Why not get faster instead?

Best of luck with it anyway.

Who says going longer won't help them get faster? Improved fitness and endurance etc etc

I meant more of the attitude "I've done a marathon now, what's next?".

Maybe because they want to go longer.
    What's wrong with that.
Some people like to go faster others longer, it's their choice.

Long and slow > Fast and quick? ;)

Maybe because they see going longer as the challenge they want to take on. Plenty of people choose to go faster, the relatively small numbers running ultras would suggest most people don't choose going longer. Not sure why you have an issue with this, you can train to go faster and go longer at the same time.

Fair enough I suppose. I guess I just find it hard to get in the mind set of do a 5k, then a 10k, then a Half Marathon, then a Marathon, now what next. But I guess some people want to push their bodies in different ways, and rather than focus on times and mastering an event/distance are always looking to take on new challenges. Small problem I suppose. As long as people are out there doing something healthy is the main thing (not that I can agree that an Ultra is healthy LOL).

It could be as simple for some people that they like the outdoors, seeing the countyside that you would not normally see while covering great distances in training and racing.
    I can see the advantages.

Sorry for taking so long to come back, It's not a case of "I have a marathon done, now what’s next" It's a case of progressing on further for me. I love running. I want to get to the point whereby I can run for as long as I want, be it 10k or 10 hours.

I was doing the whole speed thing before, but I found that when I slowed things down a little I didn't get as sore the following day. Actually slowing down by 30 seconds a kilometre meant no soreness the following day at all. And so far I've been injury free too, which may just be entirely coincidental. If I want I can always turn on the speed for race day, but I know that I’ll be feeling it afterwards. So I’m happy to finish in the middle of the pack if it means surviving to run another day.

This is exactly what interests me, having only ran a half on tarmac before I am doing a trail ultra in a few weeks with 6500 ft of climbing. I couldn't hack the drudgery of 26 miles on tarmac.

Its a pity the Wicklow Way and Connemara Ultra are so close together.

Also - in terms of 50milers, is Dingle the only one? -it's the same weekend as Electric Picnic :)
