As per the title ... slabs of Euro Shopper lager (5% - unlike the pictured can) , 500ml cans are reduced to €12 in Superquinn Lucan (not sure about other branches). Didn't check if they are short dated ....

That's one of my favourite beers actually. Usually €1.32 a can. I wonder if it's just Lucan.

I'd expect to see a lot of this in the months running up to the new minimum pricing, as retailers try to lock in customers.

After that, there'll be no more sub-euro cans. I suspect a lot of the cheaper beers will lose out, as the price difference between budget beer and the premium brands shrinks.

Anyway, anyone know if this is just Lucan or are other SQs doing it?

Is this min pricing going to happen, are there any threads about it with actual figures? any idea what the price per unit is?

I know they planned it elsewhere, possibly scotland and after no doubt spending a fortune they discovered its illegal under EU law. We'll probably squander a fortune before copping on too...

    EDIT found this
    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/0301/1224312582869.html
DEPARTMENT OF Health proposals to introduce a minimum price for alcohol are compatible with EU law, a spokesman for the EU commissioner for health and consumer policy has said.

“EU rules do not prohibit member states from setting minimum retail prices for alcohol,” the spokesman for commissioner John Dalli said in a statement to The Irish Times.

I see no Irish figures but heard it said it was going to match NI prices. NI some say 45-50p per unit, a UK unit is volume x %. A 500ml can at 5% is 2.5 units so up to £2.50, which is ~€3.12!

EDIT: I messed up my maths. 2.5units at 50p is £1.25. So the here is ~€1.56

^ Its hard to see how setting a minimum unit price isn't anti-compettion and therefore illegal. In the example above - if all drinks manufacturers with a 5% beer in their range had to set the price at a minimum of €3.12 how would they compete with each other ?

    • Multipack buying would be gone
    • 2 for 1 offers etc ...

I stated this before, any type of offer is out the window. 6 cans in a pack will be the same as 6 cans single.

Dunno what they plan to achieve? This isn't going to help anyone, it's only going to make drinking more expensive. The kids on the street will be getting locked every 2 weeks.

Yes I think 12 of us should chip in €1 each to finance the purchase of a case for someone to drink it and report back to us :D

Ahhhh sorry, I messed up my maths. 2.5units at 50p is £1.25. So the here is ~€1.56. Some sites are saying as low as 40p which is about €1.24.

It will still be interesting to see what happens with lower price beers, will they vanish. Will we see loopholes like freebies with beer, like those tesco beer & pizza offers.

i used to drink euroshopper beer when i was a student in Holland. About 3 euros for a crate of 24 330ml bottles. Beer tasted perfectly fine and no excessive hangovers.
