    Hi,

I use a pc and have had to get a static ip address. Now my mac which is connected to a hub which is plugged into the back of my router cannot connect to the internet, I can still transfer files to the mac and back but no internet access.

    What should I try?

    Thanks.

Does your mac also have a static ip address? On your pc, type ip config.

You'll get an ip address, a subnet, and a gateway.

On the mac, you should have the same subnet and gateway, but a different ip adress.

Does your mac also have a static ip address?

Mark, my mac does not have a static ip address

As MarkR said, you probably have the same IP for both of the computers. They're conflicting so only one will work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 error404

I checked and both ips are different!

If you set your PC to not have a static IP, does the Mac reconnect ?

I need to keep the static ip for a new cctv system we have which is connected to the router.

The internet on the mac was working fine until we had to change the pc to a static ip address.

Can you check or configure the DHCP range in your router (ie the range of IP address that will be given on request to connecting devices)?

If so make sure to give your PC an address outside this range to avoid conflicts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 error404

I checked this out and the pc is outside this range.

If you changed your pc to use a static ip address on the pc itself, this would cause the issue.
There should be a way to set it on the router rather than on the pc itself.

Change your pc & mac network settings back to dynamic addressing.

Log on to your router as an administrator and there should be an option to set a static IP address associated with the mac address of the network adapter in your pc & mac.

Once this is done the pc & mac should both maintain their internal ip addresses, i.e. 192.168.1.x

can you give some more details on what the ip addressing scheme is, are they on the 192.168.1.x subnet, what is subnet mask on machines, default gateway , dns etc, If you are trying to access the cctv system from outside it is easiest if you request. Also what internet provider are you using?

I am with Voadfone and still use my eircom router.

    On my pc
    wan ip starts 93.???.???.???
    default gateway starts 89.??.??.???
    First dns is 0.0.0.0

    modem ip is192.168.?.254
    subnetmask is 255.255.255.0

cctv is hooked up to back of router.

mac is hooked up to hub with printers and then hub is connected to router.

Ok by the sound of it you have given your PC an external IP address (93.x.x.x) , if this is a static ip address you have requested from vodafone then it should be set on the router itself not on the individual PC.

The PC itself should then have an internal static IP address in the form of 192.168.1.x

do you have internet access on the cctv pc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 error404

    On my router setup.

The 'connection' wan ip is 93.x.x.x
The 'local network' modem ip is 192.168.1.xxx

the cctv has no internet acess just a hard drive for recording.

my public ip is the same 93.x.x.x

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 POCCS

ah ok sorry on your previous post you said the 93.x.x.x was on your pc hence the confusion.

Can you list the following for you cctv device and mac

    IP
    Subnet mask
    default gateway
    dns

also do you have any other machines on the network, if so can they access the internet, if not it is probably an issue with the settings on the router rather than the individual machines.

If you copy and paste your ipconfig here it should help people out, just remove your external ip if you are concerned about that.

I only have two other printers on the network they are connected into the hub and they work fine, I can print from my pc and mac.

    cctv
    ip 1xx.16x.xxx.xxx
    subnet is 255.xxx.xxx.xxx
    gateway is 19x.xxx.xxx.xxx
    dns same

    mac
    ip 19x.xxx.x.x
    subnet is 255.xxx.xxx.x
    router 192.xxx.x.xxx

Why are you x'ing out your internal ip addresses this doesnt help at all and this information is useless outside your network anyway.

The printers do not need internet access to work

We really need the full details of the internal IP addresses to figure out whats going on, they do not identify you in any way, the only one which would do that is the external one (93.x.x.x) which you should not post

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,367 ✭✭✭fionny

Your Computers and Printers and Camera's IP's should all be:

    192.168.(whatever).(unique number)

So for example at home my PC is on: 192.168.0.15
    Media PC: 192.168.0.16
Housemates comp: is DHCP so will be 192.168.0.100+

The subnet mask should be the same accross the board normally:

    255.255.255.0

Your gateway should always be the address of your modem / router normally

    192.168.0.1
    or
    192.168.1.1

Your DNS can be pretty much whatever service you want ie:

    Google DNS:
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4

    or OpenDNS one's

fionny, not to familar with all this computer ip etc, thought it best to play safe and not post full address.

    mac
    ip 192.168.1.5
    subnet 255.255.255.0
    router 192.168.1.254

I appreciate all the help so far, thanks.

And the dns address on the mac? should be 192.168.1.254 aswell but just check.

Next step , if you open a web browser on the mac and in the address bar type http://192.168.1.254 do you get to the router?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 error404

the dns on the mac is 192.168.1.254

Yes I can get to the router on the mac using that address.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 POCCS

Ok well if that is the case it is likely that is the connection from your router to the ISP thats the problem.

There should be a dignostics section on the modem where you can try to ping a web address, try pinging something like www.google.ie and see do you get a reply

Also on the router do you have green DSL and Internet light?

Haha you fool! Now all your computers belong to us!

    jk ;)

Won't post any suggestions, you are in capable hands. Just from my experience on a 20+ device home network pieced together badly, static ips can be a bítch, especially when you have a younger brother who has a different network management style to you and the rest of the household don't have a clue but play with settings anyway. Best of luck.

Yes, router has green DSL and internet light.

I pinged google.ie on the router on the mac and it failed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 POCCS

did you ping it from the web interface on the router or from the mac itself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 error404

i pinged it on the router in the maintenance section.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 POCCS

It sounds to me like the likely problem is with the static IP settings on the router, if these are not entered correctly no machine on the network will work. Rather than posting the settings here it would probably be a good idea to give vodafone a buzz and go through the IP settings with them to make sure they are correct

POCCS thank you for all the help today, I will give vodafone a ring and will post here what they recommended

no probs at all, let us know how it goes

  • Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 11,248 Mod ✭✭✭✭MarkR

Try pinging 8.8.8.8 from the mac. Maybe a dns issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 error404

Mark, I pinged 8.8.8.8 on the mac and it worked fine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 POCCS

what are the dns addresses configured on your router?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 POCCS

for vodafone they should be 89.19.64.36 and 89.19.64.164
    as far as I know

You are not tied into using anyones DNS server AFAIK, I suggest using the google one:

    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4

There should be an option for setting it on router somewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 error404

the dns on the router is 0.0.0.0

i will try the ones you have listed.

ah ok, that explains the issue, if the router has no dns listed it wont be able to browse the web by anything other than IP address!

Try using the vodafone ones or the google ones fionny has listed and see if that sorts the issue

Success, I now have internet access on pc and mac now.

Thanks to everyones contribution today, I apologise for maybe not posting all the relevent info needed but as I am not up to speed on this networking etc, I was not aware it was needed or relevant.

    Thanks and best wishes.

p.s. I went into router and under DNS server I clicked on 'OPTAINED FROM ISP' and this gave me the relevant digits.
