New varifocals slightly out of focus when looking left

Just got a new pair of varifocals. I'm adjusting well to them. The prescription for the reading part is very low (plus 1 I think). The problem I have is that when reading with my head pointed straight at the middle of the material, I can shift my eyes to the right and everything is still in focus, but if I shift my eyes to the left slightly, everything is slightly out of focus. I have to physically turn my head left to read material on the left or even slightly off centre to the left.

For example, I am typing this now on a keyboard with my head pointed directly at the keyboard. If I look directly in front of me to to the right (without moving my head) the keyboard is in focus. But if I look at the left portion of the keyboard without moving my head, it is blurred. Same when reading a tabloid paper. Everything directly in front of my face and to the right is in focus, but colums to the left are not. I have to turn my head to the left to read it.

Is this normal? I would think not. Obviously, if I had to turn my head right to the same degree as I have to turn it to the left, I might say fine, but as it is it is very annoying.

Should I return to my optician? The lenses alone were 350, so not exactly cheap!

    Thanks

Varifocals or otherwise known as progressive lenses contains as you are aware three different prescriptions at the top for distance i.e. driving, tv etc middle for intermediate i.e. computer and at the bottom for reading. There are certain areas of the lens that have natural areas of blur but these are meant to be where you wouldn't normally be looking through your glasses.

All varifocals come with an adaptation warranty (usually about 30 days from collection) in case you don't get on with them. It does happen esp if your brain is not ready for varifocals yet. Definitely go back and have a chat and explain what you are experiencing. More than likely you will be moved to a different brand of varifocal or maybe your frame just needs adjusting or you could need a small teach from the Optician.

Best of luck and let us know how you got on.

    Hi

I would guess your optician didn't quite get the right measurements of your eye positions relative to the bridge of your nose. I had a major session trying to get varifocals that worked (eventually gave up) but at least my blurry areas were at exactly the same distance on either side of straight-ahead.

(My problem was that the blurry areas started way too soon, and the centre "corridor" was virtually useless at computer screen distance).

I think the "corridor" width is also causing you problems the same as it did for me. The optician tried 4 pairs of very expensive Essilor lenses before I lost it and said I'd have to settle for bi-focals, plus a pair of PC distance "occupational" glasses.

Hope this helps! Don't believe the advertising whatever you do!
