run like clockwork, would put AAI to shame!
thousands of kids and everything runs on time.

one year, its boys in morning and girls in afternoon, the next year they swop.
Early start, i think about 8:30.
Dont have any specifics but the school should get times of their section.

Wining athlete in each section gets to "county final" at end of morning/evening.

Don't be late....it will continue without your school!

If your in an athletics club, ask there, other parents or coaches should have info.

unlikely you will find any info online. Girls are on morning this year, boys afternoon. I think it's a 9 / 9:30 a.m. start and 1:30 start for afternoon. Each school gets a number. Schools are put into different groups, they wait in the tunnel, teacher will bring children on to Pairc Ui Chaoimh, they will wait a short while to run their "over in a few seconds" race. Top 3 in each heat get a trophy. 1st goes through to semi-final and not sure how many qualify out of semis to finals. Relays also held. It's a very well organised event, and they run off very fast, lots of noise. Everyone gathers in covered stand to view. You have no access to field. Teacher is responsible for child. Can be daunting for small children i.e. Under 7/8s. Starter uses a white flag (no whistle/gun), rope of some sort at finish line, which some young children are afraid of running into in case of injury but of course they drop it. A lot of children run barefoot. It can be called off if heavy rain night before or early morning. No spikes allowed. HTH.

Websites are not updated. I often email the race organizer as it may say a date of a race but not a year or a day of the week for example.

hi, does anybody know if parents are allowed to attend the childrens cork city sports on may 18th. its my daughters first year to attend and info from school is sparce (two words on website!) thanks in advance

Parents pay in at the gate - about €3 I think. Each school is designated a letter - the letters are held up at the end of the tunnel and the school must make it's way there in time. Parents are not responsible for the children, teachers are. Parent's should stay sitting in the stand and cheering on. Don't blink cos you'll miss the race! It's a massive event, huge traffic queues so I tend to get there and park for half 7 in the morning, and eat my brekkie/make myself look respectable in the car or else I would be late. Bring sandwiches, flasks of coffee and a camera. It's a great day but you have to be super organised as you could easily miss a race if you're not concentrating and listening out. It's actually very stressful for the teachers! Way harder than maths or Irish!

thanks a lot for that. Myself and some of the other parents were having a heart attack  as we heard that only 2 parents were allowed to attend. We dont want to interfer with the children - just watch and enjoy the day with them. We are coming from an island 100 miles from Cork so we all want to make a day of it. Just two other questions whats the parking like there and what time does it usually start?

Parking is horrific! Arrive by 7.30 or you'll be caught in awful traffic. If you're coming from an island in Cork, (presumably a ferry first) well I'd consider driving up the night before and staying in Jury's Inn... That's a 20 min walk down the Quays to the stadium and might be worth it? Otherwise it'll be up and out the door by half 5/6ish. You can park (if you're early) anywhere near the stadium, there will be clear cones/signs advising you.

thanks again for the advice. We're used to the early starts down here so we'll be on the road early friday looking forward to a good day in spite of traffic, parking etc. parking in the city sounds like a good idea though and I'll be sure to have sandwiches, tea, coffee, etc at hand. Hope you have a good day too we'll be the harrassed looking mothers who look like they haven't slept!!

Does anyone know is this is still on tomorrrow? With the weather forecast there is a possibility that it will be cancelled but how do we find this out? Do we have to wait for the school to be notified?

It has not been cancelled in a few years and I know they will try to run it even if showers but looks like it could be full on rain as opposed to showers!

presumably the school would be notified today if the forecast was very bad but, it would be a good idea to turn on Cork 96fm or the other one, c103fm or whichever is your local radio station tomorrow morning en-route in case of last minute announcements .
