    Hi Guys,

Thinking of doing Mechanical Engineering next year in DIT. Just have a few questions:
    1) What are employment prospects like for graduate Mechanical Engineers either in Ireland or abroad?
    2) What grades do you have to achieve to progress from the level 7 on to the level 8?
    3) Are Mechanical Engineering graduates from DIT held in high regard among employers both in Ireland and internationally?
    4) What area of industry have the majority of people found work in after graduating in the last few years?

Any help at all is greatly appreciated thanks alot,

I'm currently in third year of the level 8 course, having completed DT006.

Generally, you'll want to be getting well into the 60% range to be accepted into DT022/3, but that can change each year based on demand.

Can't say I'm looking for work at the moment, so I don't really know, but I wouldn't base a career choice on that. 5 years dowon the line, the country won't be the same place at all.

Mechanical Engineering is the broadest of the catagories, so if you don't have honours maths and don't have the option to try general engineering, Mechanical would probably be the best choice.

If you have any more question's, I'll try my best to answer them.

    Kevin.

How difficult is the maths involved? Would someone who only got a C3/D1 in ordinary level maths (with next to no work as its my only ordinary level) have a realistic chance of being able to progress on to the level 8 and finish with a 2.1 or would it be unrealistic unless you studied around the clock?

    Thanks alot

Sorry, meant to reply to this but I got distracted.

Are you in 6th year now, and guessing that OL Maths grade since you don't give an exact grade. I would say that it you are only capable of getting that mark in OL Maths, then you will have to work at Maths in college.

A lot of people entering that course are there because they couldn't do common engineering due to a lack of HL Maths, rather than points. Last year, the points for DT006 was 230.

If you lined up all the people who were offered the course, in order of points, the middle person would have 385. See here: http://www2.cao.ie/points/lv76_11.pdf I'm not sure if that's around the average for people who accepted since it's a backup for many people.

I never worked at maths, ever and I did alright(dropped from HL because of this), but if you're weak at maths, it could definitely be a sticking point to be honest. Nothing hard work won't solve though.

I have to say it's a very well rounded course, with lots of scope for specialisation in projects and the variation of modules is very good too. They really try to teach you a bit of everything.

    DT006/3 has two steams - Process(Leads onto Mechanical DT022/3) and Manufacturing(Leads onto Manufacturing,DT023/3).

Most subjects are the same, but say "Process Systems Analysis" or "Energy Systems" would be replaced with "Manufacturing Management" or "Product Design" for those who do the Manufacturing option.

Once you're in DT022/3 (or DT023/3), you're Level 7 degree doesn't count towards your final classification. Your final year project makes up 25% of your grade in Mechanical Engineering, so you can boost your average there if you put the work in.
