I think the best thing would be to go into all the local shops/chippers/etc. in your area and talk to the owner or manager to see if she can give you a few hours during the summer.

I would probably avoid applying online because you are very young and I'm assuming you have no previous experience.

And a cover letter, don't just throw a bunch of cv's everywhere, find a number of places that realistically would be hiring, research what tasks you will have to undertake and typical scenarios you will have to deal with and really focus on each application and if you can absolutely talk to a manager and be clear on what you would like and what you can offer without spewing out typical jargon at them. They will assume that you don't know whats involved with the job and might not turn up as they have nothing to base their opinion on so even a week of work experience would help, its a great age to start job hunting, I left it until the summer I finished school and then a recession hit.

I'm assuming you're not 16 yet, in which case you can't get a job in retail or supermarkets. But good places to look are garden centres and one-off newsagents (NOT spar etc.) You could be a glass collector in a pub but it's unlikely as the hours you can work, length of shifts, and the time you can work until are all very heavily restricted. Try things like leaflet collection, you might find odd jobs like that listed in your local paper.

Cover letter templates are available online. Try and find out the name of the store manager etc. as personalising it instead of having Dear Sir/Madam is always a good idea. Skills you've gained in school like teamwork, communication skills etc. should be stressed.
