    Provided that it wasn't switched on when you dropped it, I'd say you should be OK. If it was damaged, it just wouldn't work.

    I wouldn't get into the habit of using it for backup though...

    YOU could open up case ,see is there any part loose,power,pcb the powers hd could be loosened.
    just use it for music, dont depend on it for backup for vital data.
    inside case theres ,just a circuit board, pcb,power,data cable, and the drive itself.
    you could remove drive ,put inside a caddy, cost 15 euro sata caddy.
    when powered off drives go into parking mode,to avoid damage.
    if you hear a grinding noise when copying, playing music,
    That means the drive is nearly dead, copy any important,valuable data to cdr,dvd or pc drive..

    It may be portable but that doesn't mean you should lift it when it's in use! That strange sound you refer to is the read/write head bouncing off the disk which is one of the first things that happens when your hard drive starts to break down. It's too late but you have to be careful with these things. I would back up any data that is important to you somewhere else.
