EA just released their financial earnings report, where they revealed that Battlefield 3 has shipped 15 million copies, making it the best selling Battlefield title to date.

That’s a good $900 million at the box office, not counting in DLC sales and sales of online passes for used games. EA expects Battlefield 3 sales to reach 18 million by the end of the fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2013.

Prepare yourself and buy Battlefield 3 here!

Thats a hell of a lot more than i thought it would ship (ship does not equal sell btw).

Still baffles me how MW3 can sell more than BF3 .

Brand names sell, simple as. Call of Duty built itself a reputation of fun, fast-paced, arcade gameplay which appeals to the masses rather more than the slower, more teamwork orientated gameplay of Battlefield.

What's more, the console market is much larger than the PC market and CoD beat BF to console (Bad Co. 1 launced in 2008, MW1 in 2007). The larger market allows them to outsell BF despite its PC following and it's head start on console allowed it to crown itself king there as well.

Stunts like shutting down the official DICE servers probably doesn't help either.

COD players find it hard to deal with the slower pace in BF3 on consoles. 24 players on Op Firestorm and Caspian means you can go large periods of games running between flags not seeing anyone, particularly if the server isn't full. The scope and bullet drop on snipers is also daunting for anyone who played COD exclusively.

Basically, it's hard to take any market share from them because BF3's gameplay on consoles is so different from COD that people give up on it pretty quickly. It would take a PES-like decline relative to FIFA for BF3 to become as big as COD and that won't happen.

Anyway, who wants it to sell as much as COD? They're already going down some worrying, lowest common denominator routes like CQB only map packs. Imagine if it became as big? New game skins with a few extra features shipped as new games every year, glitches being exploited by huge amounts of people, rendering the game unplayable and the worst kinds of kill whoring, non-objective playing players becoming attracted to BF instead of COD.
