    Hi all,
As the title suggests, I was rear ended last year. Liability was admitted by the other insurance company and car was repaired. My insurance is now up for renewal, yet it seems that I cannot get quotes because I had an accident, even though it was not my fault and did not affect my premium at all. Has anyone every experienced this before? Im kinda stuck with my current insurance provider it seems, even though they are €250 more than the cheapest quote I can get.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Did your own insurance company pay you because you had fully comp. cover and are they still chasing the other guy's insurance for the money? That might make it a claim that's still 'pending' and would block you from moving, otherwise I can't see how that incident should affect your status.

I got stung for this as well a while back, also on an open and shut rear ending (I was stationary at a light). I suspect that you claimed via your insurance company to claim of the other party? I did this, seemed easier at the time. However because the claim wasn't closed out by the time I came to renew, I technically had an open claim, so my insurance leapt. I couldn't even shop around as I was listed as having an open claim. The following year when the claim was closed, my insurance came back down, but at that stage it had cost me about a quarter of the settlement in the increased premium.

I suspect if I had just gone directly to the opposing insurance company, this wouldn't have arisen, but you live and learn. However I was so annoyed at the insurance company not flagging this when they asked what route I wanted to take, that I will not be using them again, ever.

Can you not get back the money it cost you once the claim is settled? It seems all kinds of wrong for your premium to increase because of a claim that wasnt settled and that will become a 3rd party claim.

Didn't go through my insurance at all. The other parties insurance paid for everything. On my NCB it shows I still have my NCB, shows a claim to the third party and that it's settled.

'To' the third party implies that your insurance company paid them - shouldn't it be 'from' a third party and why is it on the NCB cert. at all? Sounds like the insurance business is penalising you even though you weren't at fault.

I'd agree. But they didn't suspend my no claims, they upped the premium for the year, so no comeback.

Apologies, just checked the NCB there. It says "third party hit insured in rear'. It doesn't actually say anything else on it.

Sounds like the claim is still open on you. You'd be surprised how often that happens. Get onto MIS Claims up in Belfast and get the claim closed on the system. Then you should be ok to shop around, or get your broker to rebroke for your renewal.

When's it due up out of interest?

Make sure the file is totally closed off. Had something similar recently with my renewal from an incident 6 months ago. NCB cert showed an Own Claim because some little check-box wasn't ticked on a computer screen.

It says that's the claim is settled on the form, so I'm assuming that shows its closed?

It's due for renewal in two weeks, despite me only getting my renewal notice today...

Mine said settled too, but there wasn't even a claim from either party.

I also had a letter months ago telling me the file was closed as no claim had come in from the other party, so there would be no effect to my premium.

Renewal comes around and NCB cert says I had an own damages claim, 0 years since last claim and my NCB gone back two stages.

Brought it into the insurance co. local office who were able to fix it. Like I said, it was some little thing that wasn't clicked closed on my file.

Who is your insurance with OP?

Sounds like its a case of a missed box tic somewhere.

A quick call to either your insurer or to MIS should sort it all out.

If you rang your insurance and told them about the accident at the time they may have it open even if you didnt claim through them.
Happened to me, just gave them a call and they closed it off

Unfortunately the OP is now in a situation where he has been refused a quote by multiple insurance companies, that fact alone (regardless of the merits of the case) will now act against him.

OP, you need to talk to a broker. I wouldn't bother dealing with telephone call agents at this stage, you'll hit the same brick wall.
