Internet in Letterkenny

I've just move to Letterkenny (new job) and looking for the best internet provider over here. I have checked with eircom, Digiweb, imagine Wimax, O2 and 3.

I am not sure what's best out there? I had UPC in Dublin and was happy with them. For here, I want a reliable, high speed, uncapped service but without having to sign a 12 months contract (if possible).

    Any recommendations?

That doesn't exist anywhere in the country. The only non-contract broadband is Magnet Simply Broadband, but you'd have to check on availability as it's going to be limited.

Letterkenny is in phase 1 of eircoms fibre rollout so speeds of 50mb should be available by the end of the summer but with a cap of 250gb per month. As for DSL, Smart offer up to 24mbps for €30 a month with a 350gb cap which is good value and ive had no problems with them.

It not reliable or high-speed and it has a low cap. It's the exact opposite of what you are looking for.

Digiweb have DSL and Metro available, There's also North West Electronics (Fixed Wireless, also known as BlueBox). It all depends on which part of town you are in really. Any of the big companies should be able to tell you what's available at your house if you call them. Others, Like NWE and Metro need an engineer to come out and check for line of sight before they can give you a proper answer.

For upcoming Eircom Fibre, You can check here: http://www.eircom.net/broadband/fibre/ to see if your phone line (if you have one?) can take Fibre. Only use it as a guide though, don't worry if your number doesn't show yet as it's still not launched. If your number does show , it is a good sign.

I've tried them all at some point over the past number of years. To be fair Eircom's was the most stable, if the most expensive.
As I posted elsewhere I had a call from them to come back having moved to vodafone where I'm getting annoying cut-outs every so often over the past number of months.
Anticipation of fibre in the not too distant future helped me make up my mind.

Does anyone know when the fibre goes live?

I was talking with Smart tech support and they said that even when eircom release these fibre lines to the cabinets, we still mite not recieve the full 24mbps.

Im currently getting 12mbps out off 24mbps from smart. Smart said that in order for my line to hold 24mbps when the fibre lines are active is for them to install additional hardware within eircom.

I am about 50m from one of the newly built Letterkenny cabinets.

    Is what Smart said correct???

You will need to switch to eircom to get the fibre speed, you should get close to the the 50mb speed being so close to the cabinet. It could be a while before other ISP's get access to the cabinets.

Smart's package is "up to 24Mbps" - the speed you receive depends on factors such as distance from the exchange and line quality among others

yeah but when my line is activate with the FTTC. The line in my house can hold maybe 50mbps. does this mean i will b able to hold 24mbps from smart cause my line will then b able to handle 50mbps. or will i stay at my 12 mbps with smart.

You will still be on the 12 mbps, Existing DSL customers will be unaffected when the fibre goes live. You will only see a difference in speed if you live nearer to a cabinet than you are to the exchange and switch over to eircoms fibre package.

    Hey,

I know that this is an old thread, but I was wondering what is the best internet provider in Letterkenny currently?

    Thanks

Depends where exactly you are living, both eir and siro have FTTH networks around the town and the outskirts (seen siro out past the Silver Tassie) you need to use there eircode checkers to see if it's available in your area.
