Volvo S40 - reduced engine performance

Hi, I have a volve S40 SE Model. For the last few months, I have getting an error message that there is reduced enging performance when I am driving and the car goes into "limp" mode.

Usually when I turn it off and on again it is fine. Sometimes the enging also revs up when I am slowing down and going to stop.

I have replaced the throttle body housing and also the throttle body sensor at the top of the accelerator but the problem is still happening.

I have had a diagnostics completed a few times now and the same errors are occurring.

Would you have any idea what the probem is ? I cannot seem to find a mechanic that can.

    Thanks

Sounds like it could be DPF related. The newer model S40's have a self regulating system that regnerates/cleans the DPF every so often but you have to be driving at motorway speeds for it to kick in (30 mins at over 3000rpm or thereabouts).

I think car might go into limp mode while regenerating but your best bet is to bring it to a Volvo main dealer for diagnosis.

Your most expensive bet is to bring it to a main dealer for diagnosis ;)

OP is the car petrol or diesel?

    Coco,
I have had similar problems with my Volvo S40 although it's a diesel & on each occasion brought the car to Koping who I found to be very helpful, indeed on one occasion they even sorted out a problem under warranty & saved me a packet.
If they have replaced the throttle housing & valve & charged you surely they won't charge you for looking at again, I'm sure that was an expensive enough job.Do they service the car for you also ?
My advice is to talk to them & tell them that your still having the problem since they fitted the parts and if they are servicing the car for you they should play ball.

If it's a diesel with a DPF then that's probably the fault.

Reduced Engine Performance warning is generic Volvo speak for the car going into limp home mode. This happens when the car's ECU detects a fault and reduces the power of the engine in order to prevent further or additional harm. You would need to have the car's computer scanned for fault codes by a garage with proper diagnostic equipment in order to determine where the problem lies.

It's not a diesel it's the 1.8 petrol more the symptoms of lumpy sometimes and revving on its own when I come to lights

There is a small rubber pipe between the intake manifold and the engine breather. It is right at the bottom of the intake manifold.Check it for cracks.
It is very common to go and it can cause the symptoms you mentioned.
