Volvo S40 - Reduced Engine Performance

Hi, I have a volve S40 SE Model. For the last few months, I have getting an error message that there is reduced enging performance when I am driving and the car goes into "limp" mode.

Usually when I turn it off and on again it is fine. Sometimes the enging also revs up when I am slowing down and going to stop.

I have replaced the throttle body housing and also the throttle body sensor at the top of the accelerator but the problem is still happening.

I have had a diagnostics completed a few times now and the same errors are occurring.

Would you have any idea what the probem is ? I cannot seem to find a mechanic that can.

    Thanks !

    Hi gjb,

I had, until recently, a 1.6D S40 SE. I had on-going problems over 3 months, with the car losing power periodically for a second, eventually culminating in Limp Home mode (Reduced Engine Performance message).

I went back the the dealer where I bought it (under warranty).. wait for it.. 7 times with the same fault.

I ended up getting a refund would you believe before Christmas, as they could not solve the problem.

HOWEVER in saying all of this, having discussed the issue with several mechanics (including a Volvo mechanic from this forum), I believe it was a DPF issue. The car had just gone over 80k miles. On one occasion, having oushed the garage about the DPF, they "cleaned it out" and the problem started happening less frequently after this but did not clear up entirely.

Anyway, my thoughts are they didn't want the expense of replacing the DPF under the warranty (cost approx. €1000) so they tried pawning me off with everything from Cam Shaft Sensor fault, to faulty glow plugs, to dirty fuel, dirty fuels lines and filters (all of these were replaced/cleaned, and the fault persisted).

Best of luck, and think about whether it may be the DPF! (obviously, only if you have a diesel!).

Thanks for reply. Unfortunately it is a petrol I have or maybe fortunately if it was going to be €1000 to replace the DPF. I am fed up of it at this stage.
