You mean apart from buying a 2012 German A5 in Romania for < € 25k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,396 ✭✭✭whomitconcerns

yes..apart from that :D..I am here in Bucharest working at the moment..and its pretty standard that they sell German cars here... the model in question is ca 29.9k from Audi new, with teh current offers available

Presuming you can do the usual checks regarding finance, mileage, crash damage, etc and they check out, then why not? If you like the car go for it.

My initial reaction was "if looks too good to be true...." but if that seems a reasonable rate for it in Romania then.... Obviously if you intend bringing it back to Ireland id look into the fees involved. Are you intending on keeping it there though since its a left hand drive ?

FWIW. I have an A5 coupe. 2.0 petrol model. Have had it since 09 and i still love it. Probably the best all round car i've driven. I have never had any problems with it either. Great car

Well basically they are 25-30k second hand, this is on the cheaper side but they can be got in Germany for around this level second hand for deffo. They import them frequently to Romania, as they are better speced models much like the UK V ireland specs on some cars.

yes need to verify all teh checks as at home alright and get a mate (well his mate) to look over the car and make sure all alright.

Will see what happens, I have been sorely tempted for a while by one of these!! Yes, will bring it back to ireland if i end up going back..VRT is about 8k so will cross that bridge if it comes up.

By all means buy it if you like it, but sell it before you come home - it'll be worthless here.

Just keep in mind if you are bringing it back the LHD will make near impossible to sell, never mind that it is not diesel. Best enjoy it and sell it there where it will be worth more.

Won't you qualify for VRT exemption, if you owned the car for some time before importing?

Even on a transfer of residence it wouldn't make any sense to bring that car home.

yes I should qualify for an exemption...and I potentially wont be back in Ireland for a while yet. SO not too worried about bringing it hime to use. Have already explored the pros and cons on a previous thread so I am happy to deal with them if and when they surface. Anyway if that did become an issue, worst comes to worse I take another cross European road trip :D and stick back on the RO plates here and sell it in RO

In that case just make sure to do all the background checks and if you like it buy it.

It's a good price for a car like that however I would try find one with a multifunction steering wheel and leather interior if possible.

Thats an interesting one...i wasn't fussed about the leather interior but thought the multifunctional steering wheel was standard?

I would have assumed it would be standard. This begs the question as to whether the wheel has been replaced if it is standard fitment on this model in Germany.

In Romania and Bulgaria if there is finance on a car the car will be registered in the name of the bank and ownership could not be transferred until the bank is happy with the situation. Once the finance is cleared a bank rep would attend at the notary office and execute the transfer documents.

Kms are recorded on the annual inspection.

So sites like motorcheck are totally redundant here.

Now thats some useful information I didnt know!!! Thank you very much!!! very useful,...i should have realised that with all the red tape here that may have been the case!

FWD A5s have come in for a lot of stick for bad handling: poor directional stability, tramlining, judder under power. One of the regulars here spent years tinkering with suspension, wheels and tyres trying to get it right.

    Have you driven one?

Was thinking that too. 160bhp sounds totally pants too.

I saw a few comments on it alright, but i am sure I read that they had improved this on teh 2012 model? Also the 2012 model has 320nm of torque with its 160hp so its a big improvement on the older model

Maybe so, I still wouldn't be buying without a good long test drive.

What about insurance claims? OP doesn't want to end up paying full whack for a damaged/repaired car.

He would have to have his own inspection arranged.

Yes I have a guy I have used a couple of times to work on GF's car, so I will get him to give it the once over first and take it on a decent drive also. Thanks for all the Headsups guys! Ive been driving a 1.9tdi octavia (Great car) for a few years and feel like something a bit more exciting!

going there in the morning and he just called and has another one also..the one i was looking at is 2011 spec my misprint at the start..sorry! He has one 2012 spec also with the adaptive headlights, and a few other bits and bobs...about 4k more in the asking price..

I read that the performance and emissions are better on the 2012 models...worth 4k more (potentially)? This one also has sat nav (mmi), adaptive xenon headlights and the upgraded stereo system. The centre consol also in this one controls everything, which I like :D
