Sexism in Football on BBC 2

    On now. Anyone else watching?

I'd heard all the usual neanderthal chants before. But i'm a little shocked at hearing English clubs having "no women admitted" signs written on certain room doors within their stadia. Quotas would be wrong though, there's a better less patronising way to get the fairer sex involved in football at a higher level. Guess its all about education.

That sign wouldn't be on the Chelsea dressing room door by any chance?

Nah I just missed it. Fever Pitch is on Film 4 though

Thought it was poor enough, a bit insightful but not much more. I regularly read Karren Brady's diary in the paper and enjoy it, she always tells good anecdotes but not much of interest coming out of her in the documentary. Shame they couldn't get input from someone like Sian Massey in her current position, would be more of interest than hearing Gabby keep repeating how she was asked "How many footballers had she slep with".

    Did she give a figure?

What about sexism on this forum?

I don't believe there is one female posting on the soccer forum.

And if there was you'd have the usual knuckle draggers who'd be giving out stink.

I'm all for that as long as they don't go down the route that your own club did and hire in male cheerleaders. Some balls on him to do it. No way would I head out there and dance as a cheerleader.

Cheerleaders in football was a terrible idea. They should leave that kind of crap to the Americans.

Didn't know it was on. Would have been interesting. Well, maybe it wasn't as it didn't seem to generate much discussion here.

@plasmaguy. Kittyeetrix (City fan for her troubles), Rebel Girl 15 (Cork fan?!), Sarah BM and RAcoon Queen (both Leeds fans) are all females who post a bit in the soccer forum. :)

Thanks Mars Bar, I didn't know there was any females posting on here...but I'm all for it...more women in football definitely needed...

    why?

not being remotely sexist here, but why are more women needed in football?

in what capacity are they needed? what do they bring to the table that men dont to make them so needed?

im all for equal rights and opportunities, but comments like "more women in football definitely needed" is not in line with that. why not "more knowledgeable football fans needed in football" or "better referees needed in football" or "better business management needed in football"? none of those are gender specific, the way it should be

it'd be great to see more like sian massey in the premiership, not because she's a woman, but because she's a bloody good referee's assistant

    This is blatently obvious.

A lot of women know a lot about football, a lot of women know more about football than men.

Take League Chairmen for example. 92 clubs in the football league in England, how many are women?

    That's just a start.

    Same with referees.

Women vastly unrepresented in professional football.

Anyways, I'm not going to get into another silly argument on here..had enough for one day.

I stand by my opinion, there should be more women at the top in football and I mean in both male and female football.

That's me done for this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,016 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

Dunno why I feel I shouldn't agree with your post Helix but I kind of do.

More focus on the women's game is needed more than the Sian Massey's in the men's game is needed.

More highly qualified female coaches and more backing from the countries football associations would be good. Canada had a torrid time trying to keep their coach due to political bull****.

The FAI have taken a huge step in the right direction with the Women's National League and Cup. Just needs to expanded and that will come with time.

I have no problem with the mens game being left to the men.
Why give our female refs to the mens game? We need them in the women's game!

More TV coverage might increase the players and the interest which might mean more women interested in coaching and refereeing.

there's genuinely one thing the women's game needs above absolutely everything else and that's goalkeeping coaches. the standard of outfield players has increased a huge amount in the last 10-20 years, but sweet mother of jesus the goalies are holding the game back from ever being taken seriously as a top level sport

I'd love to have seen Jill Maloney's performance against France recently. She made save after save and I'd love to see the quality of them.

The goalkeeping can be shocking alright. Makes me wonder what they have done with Hope Solo to make her so good? She only stands at 5ft9. I do believe that the goal should be slightly smaller. If you get your shot right at the top corner, even Hope Solo won't get it.

    This is terrible but funny!

surely that was an outfield player stuck in nets for some odd reason

I would agree with the suggestion mens football does not 'need' women. Womens football needs more women to be involved to help it grow.

I am probably way off here, but I wonder if the womens game would benefit from a sixty or 70 minute game, you could have double headers on to attract fans and tv may be more interested in showing games if they didn't have to dedicate a minimum of two hours to cover a match.

Hmm, I don't think it would be a good idea. It would become a bit novelty-ish. The women train as hard as the men to last 90 minutes so they deserve to play the 90.

Yeah you are right. No need to mess with the actual game.

A good highlights show, on the right channel would be the best place to start. I see no reason the beeb for example couldn't put together a one hour show at the weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,016 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

Even that would be a start.

ESPN started showing some cup games. I watched Donny Belles play Chelsea a few weeks back.

Eurosport does the best coverage of women's international football but they don't seem to be interested in group qualifiers.

If it's anything like other "expose" documentaries, the sign is probably on the mens toilet. "OMG the sign is like, soooo sexist". They try to take the tiniest thing and try to make an hour long program about how much of a scandal it is.

I've been burned too many times by these programs promising so much.

Do ESPN not have a weekly round up of the Woman's Super League?

If not, it's the first time she had ever seen a football. That was embassasingly bad.
