Algae ID ?

  • I'm not sure about websites, but I think the four volume set of books:

Krammer, K., and H. Lange-Bertalot. 1986, 1988, 1991. Süsswasserflora von Mitteleuropa: Bacillariophyceae, Vols. 1-4. Gustav Fischer Verlag, Jena.

    Or probably even handier:

Sims, P. A. (ed.) 1996. An atlas of British diatoms. Biopress, Bristol, England

The latter is probably more easier to get your hands on, but you would want to have an idea. The one you have there is Biddulphiales (used to be called Centrales) essentially the valve striae are arranged in relation to a point, an annulus or a central areola and tend to appear radially symmetrical. But I could be wrong as the image isn't great and I've only briefly encountered diatoms and not living algae! :pac:

  • Thanks el siglo, I hadnt a clue where to start so I did a google search for images of Diatoms centrales which led me on to rotifiers and I'm pretty sure what I have is a rotifier conochilus.
