01 golf problem

    More car problems, my sister has a 01 golf and today she noticed that when she was changing gear they were grinding badly. now she cant get it into gear at all only reverse. could the gearbox be gone?

    can she go into gear when the engine is off?
    might be a spring slipped between the clutch plates

    No 5 speed. It can go into gear when off except first gear, turns out its clutch thats gone in it, and fella in garage is putting in a clutch plate too, 400 squid for the lot, seems steep
