Flying into Schonefeld and staying at Park Inn Alexanderstrasse. Any advice on the train journey in? Train Nos. buying tickets. platforms etc would be very much appreciated. Likewise for return journey.

The Park Inn is right beside the Alexanderplatz train station. Nice hotel, great views.

You can get the Airport-Express bus (RE4, RE5) to Alexanderplatz it takes about 25 minutes.

Or you can get the S-Bahn (train) number S9 headed towards Westkreuz to Alexanderplatz station - takes about 40 minutes.

You will have no bother using German trains - they are fantastic.

I used the train for that journey two years ago, and it was very good. Also very cheap: it was something like €2.60. I have a feeling I had to get a zones A,B,C ticket or something like that. Also, being on the Continent, you have to validate the ticket at one of the machines at the platform entrance.

Thank you all; that was really useful.

Is it difficult to know which train is which or what platform to use or where to buy tickets?

Easy as pie! There will be people at the machines to help you and just follow the signs for S-Bahn, and then the S9. As mentioned, you will need an ABC ticket. Einzelfahrausweis is a single, but the machines are in English so you shouldn't have a problem.

Hint - buy your ticket in the airport and not the train station. I've passed through two or three times and each time there's a massive scrum around the ticket machines in the station as people try to stick in STG notes, root around for change, generally moan and grumble, etc . . .

As far as I remember there is a ticket machine in the baggage reclaim, so get your ticket while you're waiting and beat the queues. Alternatively, there's definitely one outside the terminal building.

Dead easy to get in and out of Schonefeld. Best bet is the RE7 or RB14 trains. They take about 25-30mins into Alexanderplatz. The RE7 runs between 15mins and 10mins to the hour to Zoologischer Garten. Alexanderplatz is the 3rd station after Schonefeld.
RB14 runs about 20 past the hour to Nauen. Again, Alexanderplatz is the 3rd stop. The destination/train number and time of next train will be shown on the blue boards at entrance to each platform. If you prefer, you can get the S-Bahn S9 to Ostkreuz and change to S5 or S7 there to Alexanderplatz. Prob takes about 40ish minutes. You need to get the ABC ticket from the Airport. Costs €3 one way or if your early in the day and might use transport later in day, a day ticket is €6.80 for all 3 zones. Berlin transport is all intergrated and a breeze to use once you get the hang of it once.

No, the opening of the new airport has been postponed. No firm date yet but likely October. Until then, Schönefeld will remain operation.
