There are two IP addresses one internal and one external of each pc on the net. I know a norton product could actually get the location of the person trying to 'attack' you, but I doubt that'd be accurate considering proxies.

You could give this article a read.

Have to admit I am curious how is it so easy and also surely the information gathered from it is of no actual use?
Excuse my ignorance on this I am not that well up on Tech just curious :)

Each external IP address is unique, and each one is tied to a geographical location. Look at this site, it tells you what your IP is and where you are and other various bits of information about you.

Then using an application that forges HTTP requests (e.g. Paros), they could use your IP pretending to be you.

There are loads of tools to find IP addresses, Wireshark is one already mentioned and it's the most well known.

Yeah, i should've mentioned that. On eircom, my IP would map directly to my house, but on UPC, it maps to about 5km away on the other side of the city. All to do with the individual networks, like if you tether your smartphone's internet to your laptop, then lookup your ip, it'll map to you

Right on top of it. This was about 4 years ago, before I switched to UPC. They might have a proxy in place now to prevent the direct mapping

mach1982 suggest it was very easy to find out what another persons IP address was. I wanted to see how easy it was for him to get my IP address to prove a point.
(I know what my IP address is)

It still logged a few IP addresses.

There are other ways to log your IP, but we'd have to be communicating directly with each other and not from You to boards, boards to Me. Boards is protecting our IP's, as do most other websites

You would be surprised how many people can fall for the trick I posted above.

Lots of people probably fall for it.
However, it is not "Very very" easy to find out a "persons" IP address unless you have access to a number of resources and even then.......

Agreed, I wasn't the person who said that, it's not easy, but it's possible under the right circumstances.

I agree and I realise it wasn't you that said it. As I said, I want to prove a point that its not very easy unless the right circumstances are met.

i live with a computer nerd whoes doing a phd and he requested my email address when i moved in. i thought nothing of it until recently when i had a discussion with a friend about ip addresses and the like, something i dont know much about. i recieved an email from the phd nerd recently about rent even though i live in the fcuking room right next to him, one in which he never leaves. the student website has a database where all our email addresses are on and he could of used this to contact me or my phone or he could of used facebook, even thought my facebook account is set up with a now defunct email address. i thought it was a very peculiar request when he asked me for my bank account details aswel. he said the reason for this was so he could give me my deposit back when i moved out? my friend has me worried about this software whic is availabe that can bypass your security if the person has your ip address....should i be?

To answer your main question, what possible benefit would he have from hacking you IP? It's not as if you're the CIA.

One thing I can think of is if you play a lot of MMOs and your opponents are childish/immature/dont like to lose.

In a game I used to play they'd tell someone to go to a location in the game (Where they could be killed and their items looted, in a Player-versus-Player area), and tell the person to go onto their thread on a forum where they had images embedded in the thread located on their (clan's) website. They'd grab the person's IP as they accessed their site, and [D]DOS them for their stuff when they'd be disconnected/have very high lag.

They forum has since stopped allowing people to embed images except from a list of reputable sites to prevent this. It's not an everyday example of what people can do with your IP, but still..

I know my IP already, but I was curious to see what it knew about me.

not much, as expected, but I love how it detected Linux and said: 'Smart move!!!'

to the op, if he lives with you, he already knows your IP address.

if you're worried about him going through your digital world, you should make sure your PC doesn't share your files and folders across the network, if you're both on the same network.

Whenever someone clicks on that link, like you did, it records your IP address into a log file for me to see. I was showing how it's relatively easy to get people's IP's
