Singles tournaments

Just wondering what everyone thinks about singles tournaments,it's all my club seem to be interested in playing every week.I suggested to the pro that i thought a few fourball ( and the like ) tournaments would be a good idea for introducing new members to each other as many join clubs on their own now but he said when he had suggested the same to the committee he was shot down by older members who said the club had never needed to play them in the past.I'm a bit sick playing singles every week and think a few fourball tournaments would be great crack and a bit of a break from trying to lower the handicap every week.Just wondering if all clubs are similar in their approach to competitions.

I much prefer singles tournaments and if anything don't think enough singles are played especially during open weekends/weeks. With singles you don't need to organise a playing partner and can play in two, three of fourballs depending on the time slots allowed in your club so they are much more flexible. They're also beneficial in that a good score will result in a handicap cut. In terms of getting to know other club members, this works fine also in singles. I joined a club last year and didn't know a single person there, each week I just put my name down on the time sheet with different people and never had any issue. I also play a number of open days and scratch cups at other courses and similarly just put my name down with whoever is on the timesheet.

My club run member fourball betterball and even foursomes the odd weekend along with the occasional scramble. Variety is good but generally I stick to the strokeplay medals and singles stableford competitions. Scrambles are good fun but I severely dislike foursomes format and avoid those at all costs.

FYI amateurs like us play competitions, professioanals play tournaments.
One of my clubs is the opposite there always seems to be a "classic" of some description and not enough singles, especially stroke comps are as rare as hens teeth.

My place tends to play 1 team Event per month, which I think is more than enough. To be honest I'd prefer if they kept fourballs, etc for the non qualifying months. We get little enough time in Ireland for handicap qualifying golf

One team event a month would be enough but my club don't do them from one end of the summer to the next.I agree about the handicap qualifying comps but i don't see a problem in throwing on a comp on a saturday afternoon (after singles comps) for anyone who wants something different.

Give me singles any day.......truer form of golf competition. Four balls, classics etc...are ok for the occasional novelty but singles are definitely superior. Too many four balls encourages sandbagging, croneyism etc..., as stated earlier singles are a much better way of integrating into a new club..........
