    Hi guys,

Lost main car key with remote at the weekend unfortunately.

I still have the non remote spare but don't want to be chancing my luck with only one key.

Having the remote doesn't really bother me - I just want a spare again locked away in the house.

The dealers are quoting crazy money to replicate the key & immobiliser, does anyone know if there's a cheap locksmith in Dublin that can make a replacement key for a 01 Focus?

'Fraid not. For a key to work in the cars ignition, the locksmith needs a computerized code to embed into it. That is where the expense comes in. It is not just about cutting a key the old fashioned way. Only the dealerships have access to those code. Locksmiths do not have access to them.

I am in the same boat. I need spare keys for my Focus too. Getting a key cut that will manually open the door & boot is the same as getting any other key cut. I was quoted 13 euros to get the key cut. But I have to buy a blank car key from a dealership to take to the locksmith, and that is another 15 quid. There are no codes involved. Grand total for a key that just opens doors is 25 euros.

To get a key that manually unlocks the doors, and will work in the ignition (that the locksmith need a code for) was about 100 euros. There is no immobilizer function.

To get a key cut that has an immobilizer function that and will work in the ignition, was over 200 euros.

Hard to find a way around this when the dealerships are the ones with the codes, and they will charge you mega bucks to look them up.

Sounds like blackmail from a true monopoly operated business.
