I have a patio that faces north, and apart from very early morning sun, it permanently in shade.

What plants would thrive in pots in this area, preferably with some colour.

Ferns, helebores, rose zepherine drouhin, honeysuckle, violets, basically any woodland plants that normally grow in shade. Really only the ferns will be happy in the most shaded part.
