NCT - Insurance Issue

Got a quick one here for you. I bought a 00 106 GTI recently with no NCT. I called quinn to get insurance or at least cover me until I get the NCT but they won't insure me without NCT. (Also not very friendly as their new ad campaign tries to claim).

I called the NCT and the lady there (equally unhelpful) just said no insurance company will insure you. I said, well how am I supposed to get it NCT'd so? "It's up to you" was her response! <- Thanks for that!

So... how am I supposed to other than bring it in a trailer which I don't have. Or does anyone know of a company that will insure me if I have it booked in or for the day even?

I dont think Ive ever been asked if the car is NCTd when I get a quote for insurance, or have ever been asked for proof of NCT when taking out a policy? Maybe Im wrong about that though...

Try another insurance company OP. I was NCTless a few years ago and I recall FBD refused to quote me. Other insurers had no problem quoting me.

Get a friend over 26 (I think) to drive it for you.

Most peoples motor policy insures them to drive anyone elses car, 3rd party only, provided they don't own it.

When i was renewing my insurance recently they wanted a photocopy of the NCT disc before they would renew.

3rd party extension usually only covers you to drive cars that are road legal, ie have valid tax and NCT.

aye it doesnt need to be insured for another insured driver to drive it, but it does need to be taxed and NCTd, Throw it up on a flatbed to get to the nct centre then get insurance done on the spot after that! I guess that could work

Not quite. Most "driving other cars " extensions require that the "other car" be roadworthy.
When pushed on this last year, a Quinn-direct Rep (i.e. the person on the phone who got stuck with our list of awkward questions) seemed a lot more concerned that the "other car" be taxed, NCT didn't appear to worry him too much.....of course I am sure if there were an accident and a claim against Quinn (Liberty) occurred then the NCT might become part of the roadworthy conditions.

I'm going to try more insurance companies alright. I don't want to have to pay to get it flat bedded to a test, and then if it fails that's another flat bed out again. Maybe a tow rope?

Will the NCT check that it is insured? As in if I get it on flat bed with no insurance will they check or ask questions?

Absolute nightmare - so if you need to get a new NCT you can't actually get it because you can't get your car to the test centre. Typical.

It just looks like things start getting normal here.
Why would anyone want to insure you on your car if car is out of test?
Even if you did get insurance, it's still illegal for you to drive to the test centre without valid NCT.

Towing truck (or trailer) seems to be the only 100% legal option.

It might depend on the insurer; Im pretty sure that my policy states that the other car much have valid tax and NCT, and Im also pretty sure that any policy Ive had has said the same.

All my policies (with various insurers) over the years have all stated that the car must be roadworthy.....the ones that didn't use this Term did not state anything about the "other car".
I'm not trying to get into an argument with you djimi, just simply pointing out to the OP what my position is.

Apart from that I am surprised that the NCT person told the OP that no company would cover them on a car without an NCT. My son got his first insurance policy over 2 years ago and the car did not have an NCT at the time(it was booked for the following week)....2 days later another driver hit him and the lack of an NCT was not even mentioned by either his insurer or the other driver's (despite the fact that he claimed from the other party's insurer).

Two points here. An Insurer can't say a vehicle was not roadworthy just because it isn't NCT'd. They can however say so if there's a wheel hanging off and the windscreen is missing IF you catch my drift.

Secondly, somebody here over the weekend had the same issue with Liberty, Hung up, called back and got covered. Also, Online doesn't ask for an NCT and will probably incept you straight off.

What do all the drivers with fail advisories do?

I got insured a few weeks ago & I was asked for a copy of the nct cert before I got my policy number & disc etc.
