    Hi everyone
I'm considering studying chinese studies business and geography in first year arts and would really appreciate some advice.
I have a few questions about the Chinese studies...
    1. Learning Chinese? How difficult is it? Is it do-able?
    2. In the third year is the year abroad compulsory? If so...
Is it possible to visit home during the year?
Expenses? Are there some grants available? Like how do u survive from day
    to day?
    Accommodation? How is that organised?
    3. The university in china? Are the lectures taught through Chinese or English?
    4. What is the drop out rate like in the course? I already failed computer applications and don't want to fail another course.

any other information would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance.

I have done Chinese throught he language centre for the past 2 years, not an arts subject, but as far as I know it would overlap a bit, definitely in first year.

I had two lecturers, who were both native Chinese people and all my classes were conducted through English.

In first year I did beginners Chinese which was very basic, I would compare it to primary school Irish, however the intermediate module was very difficult and I found it very hard to get a grasp of the writing characters. averaged 89 and 60 for the 2 years, but there was a massive step up between the 2 years. I would imagine if you contact the college or course co-ordinator they may be able to tell you more. I'd recommend studying the language, but be prepared for hard work.
