Anyone any experience with these ? Im heading over to look at one later to use as a run around for the kids. Its 00 , leaking water and has a cracked windscreen , should I bother ?
Would I be a mug to pay anything for it?

I wouldn't touch it if I were you. They have terrible gearbox problems as far as I know...

You'd be better off buying a go kart

If you have your heart set on a daewoo and your budget can stretch to it, you should try and go for a lanos.

I had a lanos SE in ice silver for many years.

Apart from the odd litre of oil every few weeks I never had a moments trouble with it. It was a lively drive as well. The thirst for oil only started after I drove around for a month on three cylinders after the cable into number 2 broke.

A few things did go wrong with her though. The wheel nuts on the front right welded themselves to the hub. The window washer reservoir shattered one day. A brush washer tore the aerial off.

Another thing that was a little bit quirky about it, and this might have just been my one; the steering wheel was way off centre for the drivers seat. It was almost in the middle of the car.

I actually miss the Wooster now that I'm thinking about it.

OP, what sort of budget do you have? I'm sure someone here can recommend a better alternative for you.

I was gonna say a Mazda Demio.
Yaris style reliability with a far cheaper price tag if you're talking early part of this century...

I have a lanos , and have had nearly all the same stuff that you had with it haha. Great buy for what I paid for it though. I was taking the matiz just for a emergency car , when the other one was being used or broken down .

Pretty much a non existant budget , am being asked for 200 for the matiz but Im thinking if I have to replace windscreen and fix a water leak Id be safer just buying one out of a garage

Sounds good but havnt seen many of them for sale. What are the chances I could find parts in a scrapyard for it. Might just get a micra if I can find one.

    Stay away from it.

You could end up spending more than your 200e fixing the above problems and I am guessing its not tested.

Go for a micra, great cars, very reliable and sought after.

    +1

Get one with a fresh NCT for about €500 and the only thing it will need then is a few drops of petrol...

I can back that up, my parents have one, it was the slowest pile of crap I have ever driven in my life and I have driven a lot of crap.
I would not have any confidence in the acceleration (0-60 in three days), handling (roly poly), brakes, safety, etc...
It really should be on a list of cars one should never drive, own or accept a lift in.
    Walking is better.
My GF once had a '93 Opel Corsa which can only be described as a desperate yoke and it was miles better.

OP, €200 is not enough of a budget to buy a car. You'll end up buying a load of scrap that'll let you down time after time.

Stick with public transport until you can afford maybe €1k.

Some could argue I specialise in sub €200 bangers...

My daily hack is a €200 special for example :) but it took a damned lot of work to put it right! If I didn't have the parts at hand it would have been a very, very expensive affair.

My advice is unless you are prepared to do the work and have the parts, leave the €500 or less stuff for another time.

Save up and get something decent, then work your way up or down :)

I bought my car for €200 and all it needs is a service and if you're really arsed, tracking.

You'll get a car for that budget but you'd want to be very patient and wait for something good to come up. I've seen worse cars for more money.

I'd never buy a Matiz though, I'd look for a Micra, 323, Fiesta, etc...

That's something I'd always be arsed about, it is far too annoying to drive a car that pulls in a few directions at once so you have to constantly saw away at the wheel, or worse crabs sideways.
Not to mention it costing you way more in tires over the year than tracking would ever have set you back.
False economy not doing that, it will cost you more in fatigue, tire wear and increased fuel consumption, not to mention stress on suspension components.

Oh I'll have it done, I've always intended on having it done.
I was just talking about keeping the car on the road and stopping it from falling apart.

I know loads of people that would put up with it instead of going through the "hassle" of getting the car sorted.

How much does that cost ? My lanos drags like fook to one side , never really thought about it before.

Usually 50 clams for a 4 wheel alignment

the mother had a matiz here for a few years and we sold it on to a neighbour who drove it for a good few more. only ever had to replace a cv joint in it while we had it, apart from the usual oil+filter etc, dont think the guy who bought it had any trouble either.

they are a small car with a under powered engine but they are cheap to tax and run. you wont win any races but then again they were not made to be driven hard. they are ideal around a town or city but dont even attempt to go on a motorway with it

Bad, bad cars! The synchromesh is the main problem on them. I had one and had to replace the gearbox twice in a year. AVOID!! Like other posters have said, there are better budget cars out there.
