I bought a kindle fire for my son in the Usa at xmas .I have given it to my cousin who knows about computers because I couldnt get the app store to work .Can anyone please advise on the best way to get this sorted.I know my cousin has been having difficulty finding how to do it so anyone have any experience with it .I couldnt download any apps ,I bought so my son could play games etc but seems a complete waste now ,Im sure if i had an american cred card it would work but have tried to open with my own amazon a/c but didnt make diff .Sorry if im not explaining right.
Basically I want to be able to download apps so if it needs to be jailbroken or something please explain .Appreciate any help .

You can't, amazons appstore is region locked to the USA only. Even if you had a US credit card it would not work as it bases it on IP address (which identifies your location.)

Unless there are custom ROMS etc.. which can allow you access to Google Play then you are stuck.

If your cousin is properly techy check out:

If there are ways and means then they will be there.

Just took a quick look and there are ways and means there but you will need to be comfortable doing so and be aware you will void all warranties and could potentially brick the device (break it beyond repair)

At this stage I would be willing to try anything. It is very frustrating as its been sitting there since xmas .I had asked when i bought it would there be any issues and the store said none .I guess i shouldnt have listened and just bought here

    Hi,

I also own a Kindle which I bought in the US. It's very straight forward getting root access on the kindle fire in order to flash different roms or install the Play store app.

All the information you need can be found in the stuck threads in the dedicated kindle fire forum on the website fionny mentions above.

You wouldnt have been able to buy it in Ireland as its a US only device as of yet.

If you are around the cork area I would be happy to have a look for you, im not a stranger to rooting devices (i do it on my phones)

Thanks soooo much Fionny but im in Dublin .The frustrating thing is that my cousin is really good at this kind of thing but he just hasnt had the time to spend time at this and my poor son keeps asking me when he will get it back (cous has it since new year). It will be left there if i get it back and my son cant download games though ,bought for him thinking it would be like his own iphone as he keeps downloading games on mine .:(

Ah well, the is open to you anyway. Even if you want to post it down :) I know obviously you might not want to do this not knowing who I am and all.

Maybe try nagging your cousin on a regular basis :P

Well, it's no need to jailbreak your kindle for downloading apsp.
BTW, this lists of kindle fire apps are not bad: http://www.appolicious.com/curated-apps/7533-kindle-fire-educational-apps

it's actually not, it just only has the amazon app store installed and that is locked to US only IP addresses.

you can load whatever apps you want onto the kindle fire very simply by emailing the apk of any app you want to use to yourself and then opening the attachment in your browser.

getting the android market (google play) working is a little more complicated and involves editing a few files, but most other apps will work right away using the above method and most apk's of common apps are only a google search away, or you can install them on an android phone via google play and then email them on to yourself to open on your kindle fire.
