Directory Services high CPU usage

    Hey,
For the past week or so my macbook pro OS X 10.6.8 has been running the battery empty quicker than usual and has been heating up more than usual.

In the activity monitor I see that DirectoryService has 95%+ cpu usage.

I Googled around a bit for it and others seem to be associating it with ad blocking, where the /etc/hosts file is thousands of lines long. When I check my etc/hosts (by just typing it in to the browser - I presume I'm checking it right?), it's only a dozen or so lines long, so I don't think the same solution proposed would work for me.

I can't find any other solutions so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help!

    Any tips much appreciated :)

Something else is causing it. Do you have Kies installed?

Samsung Kies? Yes I do, should I get rid of it?

Yes, it seems it doesn't play nice on Macs.

I moved Kies in to the trash and the cpu usage didn't drop. However it seems it's due to the KiesViaWifiAgent, which I can still see in the Activity Monitor. Not sure how to remove that, since the Kies application folder is no longer there?

    Did you empty the trash?

No, but I've never moved a programme back out of the trash before...is it just a matter of dragging it back out to the app folder to get what I need?

    Thanks v.much for the help.

edit: I moved it back to applications and was able to find the correct file, deleted it (After force quitting it from the system usage), then deleted Kies entirely again. The fan almost immediately slowed down, and the batter life has shot up :) Thanks very much!

    What a bad programme.

Is there a way to permanently delete something without emptying the trash? There might be things I would want to rescue from the trash at some point, so I don't want to empty it all.

    Thanks again

The only other way I know to delete something without emptying the trash is to use the rm command in Terminal. Which I wouldn't really recommend as it's rather dangerous.

If you have stuff in the trash that you don't want to delete, then it shouldn't be in the trash. Store it elsewhere.

Kies is terrible. AFAIK you do not need Kies installed to use Kies Air to transfer stuff wirelessly to your phone/tablet over wi-fi through the browser.
