OK, putting the "macho" aside, have you ever been mugged and not come out on top? Did you fair ok, but wish you could have done better?

I've never been mugged as an adult, which I find a little surprising TBH as I'm not particularly big and I regularly walk home alone at night and plenty of other stupid things your not supposed to do.

When I was a teenager I ran away the only time some lads tried to mug me. I'd do the same again if I had the chance, no shame at all in being mugged OP, makes no sense being stabbed over thirty quid. If you look like you have a few bob then your doing everything right by societys standards, keep being awesome :)

.... infact thinking about it, its probably the fact that I look like I'm homeless that no one bothered trying to mug me.

Yup, had been doing TKD and kickboxing for about 2 years, had won a few tournaments and was working part-time in a chinese restaurant when I was about 17 and some guy came up and demanded my money holding a wheel brace. Gave it straight to him and he ran off. Was sickened as my dad drove by in a squad car about 2 minutes later. But yeah, felt pretty pathetic for a while about it, but after a while I realised it was probably the smartest thing I could have done considering I only had a tenner on me and screw taking the chance getting beaten to a pulp for a tenner

Giving someone 50 euro to void him breaking my nose or worse still hitting my girlfriend is a price I'd gladly pay for some **** to leave us alone.

I'd rather go home without money or a phone than to be the guy who gets a cracked skull because of his pride.

Got mugged in Holland a few years back after getting lost. The guys were actually quite polite about the whole affair, they gave me directions to get back to the metro station and all.

    Nice posts.

All too often on the subject of martial arts, people give account on how well they fought.

No one hardly ever gives account of their loses, or ill-fate

I'll be honest about it and say NO I've never been mugged or otherwise on the street and don't know what I'd do if it happened.

However my son was mugged and thankfully he done exactly what I told him to do if that situation ever arose - give them whatever they want if it mean's you can walk away safely.

In the US, there was a comedian named Richard Pryor", who had a interesting skit about "Macho Man".

He rattles how people, especially men, who have the stupid ego to stand ground when they aren't supposed to

Well that's fair enough walking away when your mugged. But what about a different situation, like someone breaks into your house, you, your other half, kids, etc. What would happen there?

Heh, happened to me a few years back. A couple of young lads kicked the front door in, grabbed herself's handbag which was on the hall table and legged it. Our daughter was right beside it when it happened, and my wife was heavily pregnant with no 2 at the time. In the heat of the moment I gave chase, and found myself alone in the middle of Teresa's gardens a couple of minutes later. Luckily the brain then kicked in (eventually) and I scarpered back to the house where I had manfully abandoned my young family for the sake of a handbag full of make-up and household bills.

If someone broke into my house today, I'd make sure that I wasn't blocking their exit route. If they didn't seem in a hurry to leave at that point, it would suggest that more than thievery was going on, and I'd probably go at them full tilt.

FWIW, after the first break in where we were in the house, the wife was never comfortable in the place again, and we ended up selling. Personally, I don't think there was ever any serious threat of violence, but you have to be comfortable in your own home.

Never been mugged, after many years of wandering around the city late at night. I'd put it down to a mix of blind luck, looking impoverished, jovial manner, and a tendency to walk the other way when things look even vaguely dodgy.

To be fair only been on one fight in my life outside of the cage.
It wasn't a muggin or anything so handing whatever they wanted over wasnt an option.
Someone came up behind me and floored me withe a punch in the in the back of the head. His 2 mates joined in and started kickin my. Got to my feet and ran. Luckily only one ran after me and cought up with me and tripped me. The trainin Id done by then wasnt much but knew what a heel hook was and the damaged it did. Made sense at the time ha.
Went home and was taken to hospital with a suspected concussion cuz i got sick when I got in. Turns out the adrenaline dump of being in my fist "real" fight can do that.
But learned even if ya dont get away Running should always be your first option in that situation. Worst case scenario you get distance between yourself and most of them.
I still dont have a clue why they decided to do it or what exactly I coulda done to avoid the situation but just glad the first instict was to run.

I absolutely love that you heel hooked the motherf*cker before running away.

Deffo increases your chances of escape :D

    holy feck!
The same thing happened me in 1999 just down from centraal station in amsterdam.

two lads kept asking me quite politely to buy coke/ecstasy , I delined politely several times but they kept walking down the street asking me. laughing and joking with me.

then they mugged me - politely (a theme here perhaps ) and only took 20 guilders. Then left me with the rest "cos we're not assholes"....
    ok I guess.

I didn't do any martial arts back then and I was quite unfit too.
Throwing digs never entered my head at the time.

Now I'd be bigger than them and would probably tell them to f;off and see where that took me.
I'd certainly be able to run if needed.

Lol yup was something along the same lines. Was back around 2001, had just moved over there, was wandering around Gaasperdam and got stopped up by three lads gibbering and flapping their arms about. After a few seconds of initial confusion I asked did they speak English-they apologised for speaking Dutch, explained they were mugging me (one of them didnt speak good English, so mimed his intentions, which was pretty funny) and asked for my cash.

I only had about a tenner our money on me, just handed it over and told them I was lost-they walked me up the road a bit and showed me how to get back to the metro station, apologised for the mugging and said to enjoy the rest of the day. I was left pretty bewildered by the whole affair :o

Definitely didnt turn me off Amsterdam at all, its a great city all in all.

I was stopped by two townies on Shelbourne Road in Ballsbridge about 10 years ago, They asked me "which way is it to town?". I knew these scumbags knew the answer to this question and that it was a lead up to something else. I pointed towards town and said "that way". Next thing, one of them is scrunching up his face and saying, "I'm going fcuking mess you up" over and over again. The other one was standing casually off to one side and keeping sketch.

Foolhardy as I may have been, I stood my ground, stared him right in the eye and was ready to take the little fcuker on. Until, I noticed his hand go to his pocket and a syringe being produced. As soon as I saw that, I ran and ran and ran. I was 30 yards away before they knew it. Funny thing is, they shouted "come back here!" at me. Yeah, as if! I was very pleased with the outcome of that encounter and I feel no shame in having legged it!

I was mugged once when I was a kid. Walking through a rough neighbourhood as a shortcut with a friend of mine. I knew to keep my money in my socks just in case, and this time it paid off. We were suddenly surrounded by a group of kids a few years younger than us, but one of them had a knife. He wanted my wallet (no phones at this stage), so I gave it to him empty.

I've been training in KM for the past few months, I started for the fitness aspect, but even with the little I've learned, I'd always run first. Whatever I know from Krav I hope to be enough to get me out alive if running or handing my stuff over isn't physically an option.

There was one incident in one of the more "interesting" parts of Lisbon. I had been backpacking around the world for two years at this stage. I had jumped (illegally) a train in Seville in Spain. I had no idea where it was going. I did'nt much care either. I fell asleep and woke up in Lisbon central train station. I left the station and began to walk. I had no idea where I was going. I was young and adventurous. Reckless even. I was like a crazy horse! Anyway, I walked what seemed like an endless gauntlet of Morocans dressed in black shirts and black trousers who would approach me in a clandestine fashion and ask me if I would like to buy some hashish. Like Bill Clinton, I had smoked weed in College but never inhaled it. I was overcome by a combination of curiosity about the effects of weed and a desire to be freindly to all of these guys dressed in black so I used the money I had earned crushing grapes with my feet in France and I started to purchase a small amount from each one who came up to me.

After a while I had walked for miles and there were no more men in black. My feet were very sore from all of the walking and this problem was exacerbated by the fact that I was now carrying a significant amount hashish which was weighing down my old sweedish army surplus backpack. I found a little old graveyard which was enclosed by crumbing ancient walls. I went inside and sat down. I started to feel very lonely and homesick and longed for something to take away the pain. I'm not proud of it now, but I decided to take out my pouch of tobbaco and rolling papers and, just as I had learned during my time as a roadie with The Happy Mondays, I began to roll a "funny cigarette".

One led to another and then another and so on until I became disorientated and paranoid. Suddenly, I was in the middle of some kind of biblical "end times" and all of the corpses in the graveyard were climbing out of their tombs and graves and walking towards me, arms outstretched like a scene from "Sean Of The Dead". All the while I could here a woman's voice singing fado music, her voice becoming louder and more lamentful like a portugeese banshee with a loudhailer.

I was consumed with fear. I ran and ran and ran. Eventually I could not run anymore and I collapsed. I woke up the next day in the space between two wheely bins down some alleyway which stunk of putrifying salted fish. I had lost my backpack, My head was a mess and I did not know where I was. It was the lowest point in my life. Or so I thought. Just as I stood up to leave this stinking alleyway, I found myslef surrounded by five or six of the most scar-faced scarey looking jailbirds I had ever seen. Each one of them was armed with either a bowie knife or a machete. They started to brandish their weapons at me, shouting at me in Portugeese. My head began to swim and I had the sickening feeling I was about to be hacked to death. Then suddenly, echoing through the alleyway came this sound! I'll never forget it. It was WOOF, WOOF, RGHHH WOOF. Along came a shaggy dog and chased all of the bad men away!

Had a weird one in town there last year....

I was taking out a dublin bike in smithfield on my way home from training and two lads (who I had seen earlier and I knew were scumbags) walked past. One of them elbowed me right in the kisser as he walked past. Not sure if they were expecting me to hit the deck or what but I knew immediately what had happened and knew I was a long way from being knocked out so I sprinted about 20 metres then turned around to suss out the situation to see if I needed to stand my ground and fight or what. Two obviously unfit and overweight lads still standing where they had hit me. I'd guess they had a good 20KG each and some height on me. No reason for the elbow in the mush that I could determine. Considered for a split second calling them something that would demand they run after me to defend their honour then running the 50 metres until they were gassed and taking my retribution, but the one thing I'm thankful for getting from having been in the ring a few times is that I don't feel any need to prove myself to some random muppet (or indeed myself). So they stared at me, then turned around and walked off. Not a word was exchanged. It was almost surreal.

Well that's fair enough walking away when your mugged. But what about a different situation, like someone breaks into your house, you, your other half, kids, etc. What would happen there?

If he runs away at the sight of me or the sound of my shotgun cocking, I'll let him run away and call 911. But if he doesn't leave, it means that it's not a simple robbery anymore. He probably has a weapon. When that happens, I'll be ready to defend myself and my family.

Fortunately, I've undergone close combat training which will be very helpful in that situation. Remember, you don't have to kill unless you're in a kill or get killed situation. Usually, you just need to incapacitate him while your wife or kid calls 911.

I can't bear thinking not coming out on top of that situation. I can handle if it's just me. But if it's in my home, with my wife and kids, I'll do anything that I can to protect them.
