Ah yes, good old digital dash.... tried by many, failed by all in the 80's and 90's. They went wrong in the Audi, so most were changed to analogue. Audi themselves stopped using them in later Quattros. Fiat had a digital dash in the early Tipo's, and Honda had a handful in early Preludes. All ditched them quickly!

We had a Tipo TD DGT with the digital dash - it actually worked pretty well!

What's even more impressive is that in most cars around then the audio clips weren't stored digitally, there was an actual device which contained the audio clips in recorded form and played them back.

I tried finding a repair guide for the Safrane's module but couldn't, but it's essentially like an old edison wax cylinder record player but tiny and more durable. Someone rebuilt one on one of the gadget sites like hackaday, but my google-fu is weak this morning.

Friend's Opel Senator has the digital dash too, and it still works fine.

Totally off topic, but on the subject of wax cylinders this never fails to crack me up.
