Looks like an old school oil can, for oiling components on older cars/machines, not draining or filling oil.

If I remove the sump nut is it possible just to drain 500ml of oil and tighten it again or would I have to drain it all then refill?

Yes but it would be slow, don't fully release the nut, just loosen the nut until oil begins to be released, your talking an overnight job to let that amount go without the sump nut falling off and all the oil releasing.

If you are capable of doing that just drain it all out and put back in what's required to bring it to the correct level, unless you have a suction pump yoke. If you don't mind a mess you could let a few hundred milliliters out and plug it again with the sump nut, messy though, very messy. Only chance that with cold oil.

Someone might volunteer a lend of one for a few mins :)

Pull out the dipstick, wipe off oil, put it back in, pull dipstick out again, wipe off oil. Keep repeating. Think I read that someone did that on this forum

your garage would ahve a syphon device for extracting oil via the dipstick hole. Borrowed one and did just that a day or two ago.

I'm too scared to even drive it with the excess oil in it. I bought a syphon device but it's not due to arrive until Monday and I have NCT tonight.

Tried making a make shift syphon using a bottle and tubing but that didn't work.

aquarium air hose. Pop it in and siphon the oil out.

Try to get a large plastic syringe from the local chemist and fit the tubing onto the end of the syringe. It should be possible to draw up the oil with this.

I have a suction device. You would generally need to warm the oil up first to make it flow more easily. How much too much is in it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,930 ✭✭✭galwayjohn89

Theres around 500ml too much in it.

Going to head to the chemist now and see if they have any syringes.

Make sure you have a good tight seal between the tubing and the syringe.

aquarium air hose. Pop it in and siphon the oil out.

I can vouch for this way of doing it. Works fine.

Just make sure that the bottom of the engine is higher up than the container you're syphoning into of course.
