Hi I went to the orthodontist the other day and he told me my top jaw bone didn't develop properly as a child and I need to get an upper mouth splint to help the bone grow out. Has anyone else had it done?

Then he said I need braces after.

He quoted me 5200 for the splint, braces and four veneers at the end, is that normal? Seems like such alot, but I do need to get it fixed, my jaw looks out of shape from front and side, not badly but it bothers me, but 5200 is such a lot!

I am currently attending the Dental Hospital, referred by my dentist for unexplained pain in the upper jaw area, they made me a splint which I now wear overnight...€60 Total Charge. I have a muscle in spasm in my upper jaw following an untreated crack in my jaw!! Very painful:eek:

I don't think they would go so far as to get into cosmetic orthodontics but, you could access the dental hospital via their A&E, I had a letter from my Dentist but I'm not sure if that's obligatory....anyone else know??

    Best of luck!

Is this a specialist orthodontist? Usually a specialist won't do restorative work also. Pandora 2 the OP is not referring to an occlusal splint but a arch expanding device or else some sort of voodoo ALF orthodontics.

Specialist? I don't know, he's a cosmetic orthodontist if that explains it. Has anyone any information on this splint I can't seem to find any info on the net? He said I will wear it behind my upper teeth and it will help the bone grow out.

I was just looking up info on underbites on the net and they all seem to have had jaw surgery but mine is not as extreme a case as anything I've seen on the net. But I definitely do have an underbite that I would like to have fixed and ideally not have surgery?!

Poster before last I think you're thinking about the splint for grinding? I could be wrong.

Do you not think it works Fitzgeme? He said it was new enough, and he had studied it in America and it wasn't really done in Ireland yet. They are a reputable clinic.

Nope, see here to see if this operator is a specialist orthodontist. Sound like a complex case. http://www.orthodontics.ie/

I don't see them on the list but on their own website they say they do restorative and cosmetic work.

I think it's a palatial expander I'm on about. Have you any opinion on them Megan Great Rubble?

Palatal expanders are good for the correct case, however only in the correct hands. I am worried you are going to a general dentist who cannot by definition cannot be the most experienced or trained person to carry out complex orthodontic treatment. PM me the website or the clinic and I will advise.
